               SLAY-SUSPECT GI SANG FOR CLINTON
               By NILES LATHEM

The U.S. peacekeeper accused of murdering an
11-year-old Albanian girl serenaded President Clinton
during his Thanksgiving visit with troops, the soldier's
               family told The Post yesterday.

"We are absolutely shocked by this. He is just an
average kid who came from a good family upbringing.
We are all hoping it's some kind of mistake," said Lou
Ronghi Jr., brother of Army Staff Sgt. Frank Ronghi.

"No matter what happens, our hearts go out to the family
               of that little girl."

Sgt. Ronghi's arrest for allegedly molesting and
murdering the girl in Kosovo threatens to erode the trust
between NATO forces and the people they were sent to
               protect.

The highlight of Ronghi's six-month tour of duty came
Nov. 22, when he called his mother, Phyllis, at 6:30 a.m.
to tell her he'd been pulled from the field to sing for
Clinton and daughter Chelsea, who were on a
Thanksgiving tour of Camp Bondsteel, the U.S. military
               headquarters in Kosovo.

Ronghi told his mom that he joked to the president:
"Wayne Newton couldn't be here, so you got me
               instead," his brother recalled.

His surprised mom replied, "You didn't say that to the
president of the United States?!" and the soldier said,
"Oh, yes, I did," said brother Lou.

The GI sent his family photographs of the encounter
with Clinton that his parents now proudly display in their
               Niles, Ohio, home.

"He had a great voice -- a voice like Frank Sinatra," Lou
               said.

Sgt. Ronghi, a divorced 12-year Army veteran who
served in Operation Desert Storm, as well as in Egypt
and Haiti, had re-enlisted a year ago.

He is now in an Army prison in Mannheim, Germany,
awaiting the results of a military investigation into the
death of Merite Shabiu, whose body was discovered
outside the town of Vitina on Sunday.

Lou Ronghi, a Niles cop, said his brother frequently
called and wrote home from Kosovo, where he was
serving a six-month tour with the 504th Parachute
               Regiment.

"There were no problems at all. At first, he was a little
hesitant about going. Then he told us he was getting
used to it," Lou told The Post.

News that an accused murderer came in contact with
the president and his daughter caught the White House
and the Pentagon by surprise last night.

David Leavy, spokesman for the White House National
Security Council, said the president's concern is that "the
tragic incident doesn't overshadow all the good work of
the men and women in the armed forces in Kosovo."
