Our only ailment is the presence in the White House of a president so incorrigibly dishonest on the personal stuff that he can’t turn in an honest golf card...” - Columnist Chris Matthews, San Francisco Examiner & host of TV’s “Hardball” ************************************************ Bill & Al’s Hollow Military In his 1994 State of the Union address, President (I STILL have a hard time referring to him by that title) Bill Clinton pledged “that as long as I am President, (our military) will remain the best equipped and best prepared fighting force on the face of the earth.” This from the same guy who said he “loathed” the military in his earlier draft-dodging days. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone to discover yet another broken promise by the man who swore, “I did not have sex with that woman.” As the Republican National Committee pointed out this week, the Clinton/Gore administration has cut our defense by one-third since taking office, “reducing it to the lowest level since before the attack on Pearl Harbor.” Among the shocking statistics: (1) Our army has been reduced by more than 630,000 soldiers and civilians, (2) the number of Army divisions has shrunk from 18 to 10, (3) our number of Navy ships has been cut from 586 to 324, (4) the average age of a Marine Corps amphibious assault vehicle is older than the average age of a U.S. Marine, and (5) since 1990, our Air Force fighter wings have shrunk from 36 to 20. Who’d have ever thought any president could be worse for our military than Jimmy Carter? ************************************************* The Book On Sharpton What’s the old saying about being known by the company you keep? Democrats far and wide - including Al Gore and Hillary Clinton - are paying homage these days to the “Rev.” Al Sharpton in his Harlem, N.Y. digs. You’d think the guy was the second coming of the Rev. Martin Luther King. You’d be thinking wrong, though. Columnist Carl Strock of The Daily Gazette in Schenectady reminds us what Al Sharpton is really all about: * Sharpton “in 1988 accused an assistant district attorney in Dutchess County of raping a black teen-age girl and smearing her body with excrement, and dared the assistant D.A. to sue if the accusation was false. Of course, the assistant D.A. did sue, and won, and of course the reverend never apologized, never retracted a libelous word, never presented a shred of evidence to support his preposterous accusation and never showed the slightest remorse for turning the assistant D.A.’s life upside down. * Sharpton “advised the perpetrator of the rape hoax, Tawana Brawley, not to cooperate with the state attorney general, Bob Abrams, because it would be ‘like asking a Jew who watched his family burn in the Holocaust to cooperate with Hitler’ - comparing Jewish liberal Bob Abrams with Adolf Hitler.” * Sharpton “led demonstrations in Harlem against a white shopkeeper involved in a landlord-tenant dispute with a black shopkeeper and...told an angry black crowd, ‘We will not stand by and allow them to move this brother so that some white interloper can expand his business on 125th Street,’ while some in the crowd denounced Jewish ‘bloodsuckers.’ Later, alas, one of the demonstrators burst into the white-owned store, firing a gun, and set a fire that killed seven people plus himself.” **************************************************** Union Goons Riot in Charleston A company in Charleston, S.C. used 20 non-union workers to unload a cargo ship on Wednesday - which led to a violent confrontation between crazed, drunken union thugs and the police. According to the Associated Press, 600 police officers were confronted around midnight by 600 union longshoremen who “arrived at the terminal and began hurling rocks and other debris at police.” AP also reports that, “Many of the protesters carried beer bottles, shouted obscenities and chanted, ‘ILA, ILA.’” Police had to bring in dogs to stop the goons from tearing down spotlights the police had set up and launched a “smoke grenade to break up the crowd.” The rioters were so out of control that, “News photographers and television cameramen were struck with debris and beaten by protesters.” This, my friends, is what the union movement in this country is REALLY all about.
