Schaffer Plans To Skip Speech

WASHINGTON- It looks as if self-described conservative Rep. Bob Schaffer,
who
never misses a chance to denounce President Clinton, will boycott Thursday's
State of the Union speech for a second straight year.
Schaffer, a Fort Collins Republican, says he doesn't want to extend that
traditional courtesy to a president he believes has "debased" the White
House
and his office.
"I've been thouroughly convinced that he has occupied the greatest office in
the land as a prosecutable felon," Schaffer said.
"And there's also a personal thing at stake here. I lecture my kids to stay
away from people you can't trust- people who have no respect for other
humans
and who would violate a woman for his own sexual gratification."
Still, Schaffer remains somewhat open-minded, conceding a "slight chance"
he'll decide at the last minute to attend the big speech. No word yet from
fellow conservative Rep. Tom Tancredo of Littleton, who, like Schaffer, made
a highly public point of boycotting last year's address.
