L.A. Raid Finds Fake Documents

LOS ANGELES (AP) - More than a MILLION fake documents, including Social
Security cards and drivers' licenses, were seized during a raid of a
self-storage business, officials said Monday.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service said the raid late Friday led to
the arrest of five people who are being held without bail.

The seizure was related to 1998's ``Operation Fine Print,'' in which 11
people were arrested and pleaded guilty in federal court.

Juan San German, a 34-year-old Mexican citizen, was sentenced to a 6 1/2-year
prison sentence earlier this month for running a counterfeiting ring that
supplied illegal immigrants with fake identity documents throughout the
country.

The counterfeit documents included Resident Alien, or so-called ``green
cards'' issued by the INS.

``We have dealt another significant blow to the counterfeiting industry,''
said Tom Schiltgen, INS Los Angeles district director. ``This operation will
have a ripple effect as the would-be recipients of these documents are also
put out of business.''
