Gore dismisses allegations on marijuana use

Updated 12:40 AM ET January 25, 2000
DAVENPORT, Iowa

(Reuters) - Vice President Al Gore Monday dismissed as old and
inaccurate news a report that he was a regular marijuana user
when he returned from Vietnam in 1971.

In an interview with an NBC affiliate in Iowa on Monday, Gore was
asked about a report that he was a daily user while a reporter in
Tennessee in his 20s.

"This came up in '87 or '88 and I dealt with it a long time ago,"
Gore said. Gore said he had not smoked since he first ran for
public office and flatly denied daily usage.

He said he used marijuana "when I came back from Vietnam, yes,
but not to that extent."

"This is something I dealt with a long time ago. It is old news.
When I was young I did things young people do. When I grew up, I
put away childish things," Gore told reporters.

The allegation that Gore used marijuana daily while working for
the Tennessean newspaper was made by John Warnecke, who worked
with Gore in the 1970s.

Warnecke gave his account to Newsweek reporter Bill Turque for a
biography of Gore. It began to leak out after Newsweek last week
delayed a planned excerpt of the book, "Inventing Al Gore: A
Biography,"

Warnecke told the Washington Post in an interview from his
California home on Monday that he knew Gore "very, very well" as
a friend and a next-door neighbor in Nashville and later raised
money for his campaigns.

The Post quoted him as saying that Gore used marijuana until the
week he announced his candidacy for the House in 1976, or about
four years later than the vice president has maintained.

Warnecke told the Post he gave a different account in 1987, when
Gore was gearing up to run for president because Gore repeatedly
pressured him to "stonewall" and "not to tell the truth" about
their drug use. He said he felt "intimidated" by Gore.
