</A> -Cui Bono?-
The 'crisis', of course, is totally orchestrated.
It seems our goverment used to meddle in the internal affairs of
countries who elected a government who was deemed 'too left'...
now it seems we are going to meddle in the internal affairs of
governments we deem 'too right'...
So much for democracy...whatever happened to the concept of a
people having the right to choose their own form of government?
And in reading below about the riots in Austria, I'm reminded of
two things: first to mind is COINTELPRO, the now well-known
secret project of the U.S. government to infiltrate any groups
which opposed the government, and thereby encouraging such groups,
which had previously been non-violent, to conduct violent and
illegal acts. There is evidence that COINTELPRO never was
discontinued, only renamed; there is also evidence that most major
European countries had there own versions of COINTELPRO, which
also probably never ended, only were renamed as something else.
Secondly, I'm reminded of an article I read years and years ago...
it concerned the priest who was openly and vehemently opposed to
the reforms the Vatican had undertaken, starting in the 1960s.
This priest's name eludes me at the moment, but he became very
popular in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s in leading a
'back to Latin' movement (resulting in conservative Catholics
forming splinter churches), and in openly criticizing the Pope for
being 'too liberal'...
The article I read pointed out that there was evidence that this
conservative priest, if not blatantly a shill, was at least being
manipulated by the more liberal elements within the Catholic church...
because at the time, the church in general, and the Pope in
particular, were under constant criticism for not allowing women to
be priests, for not allowing birth control, etc. With the result that
the Vatican began to dig in it's heels and become entrenched in it's
conservative stance...
Except along comes this ultra 'rightwing', conservative priest, who
got gobs of media attention worldwide, who indeed formed splinter
churches throughout the world...condemning the Vatican for it's 'too
liberal' tendencies...
The article quite succintly pointed out that the end result was to
force the Vatican into a more MODERATE stance...
So remembering that, I have to wonder if Herr Haider, if not knowingly
a 'shill', is being manipulated by leftist elements to achieve their
own ends...perhaps to force the EU into a more leftist stance?
I also remember that the quickest way to entrench someone in power is
to start a campaign of boycotts, etc., against the country -- the only
thing that achieves is to make the majority of the populace of that
country, who heretofore were apolitical, more supportive of their
government due to the people's feelings of patriotism, and that
outsiders have no right to meddle in the affairs of their country.
If The Powers That Be sincerely wanted to see Herr Haider out of office,
they would take a hands-off stance, and let nature take its course. By
By orchestrating boycotts, recalling ambassadors, etc., they instead are
assuring Haider will not only remain in office, but gain more support
(if not popularity) from the Austrian public...

Riots as Austria's crisis deepens
Hard right takes power in Vienna to angry demonstrations
The Austrian far right in power: special report
John Hooper and Kate Connolly in Vienna
Saturday February 5, 2000
Austria's hard right coalition came to power yesterday amid violent
protests in Vienna, as governments in several countries began to make
good their threats of a boycott.
Last night, police in riot gear clashed with protesters for the second
time in hours. Twenty-five police were injured.
President Thomas Klestil appealed for calm in a country which has rarely
seen such anger. He called on the world to "give the new government a
chance and judge it by what it does". But he warned the chancellor,
Wolfgang Schüssel, and his coalition partner, the populist Freedom party
leader Jörg Haider, that if it strayed from guidelines he had made it
underwrite "it would have a serious impact at home and abroad".
The US joined European nations in limiting contact with the new
administration, but the secretary of state, Madeleine Albright, said
further judgement would be made "on deeds not words". Her colleague, the
defence secretary, William Cohen, sounded a more ominous note. On a tour
of Germany, he said the new government "might be a step back into a very
dark past".
Mr Klestil delivered his warning after Mr Haider, who will hold the
government's fate in his hands, had questioned the need for the commitment
he and the new chancellor had signed. It pledged Austria to respect basic
human rights and to re-examine its Nazi past. "It is an affront to the
public that such matters of course have to be signed," Mr Haider said.
The high emotions were highlighted at a ceremony at which the outgoing
Social Democrat chancellor bade farewell. Viktor Klima appeared to be on
the verge of tears and several of his staff openly wept.
Outside the imperial palace, while ministers were taking their oaths of
office, demonstrators were baton-charged. They later stormed the social
affairs ministry, demanding to see the new Freedom party minister.
There was little evidence, however, that the more moderate elements in the
government had grasped the reasons for the fury. The foreign minister,
Benita Ferrero-Waldner, said: "There is nothing in Austria which justifies
this, apart from a couple of unpleasant comments by Mr Haider."
Contrary to early reports that the Freedom party had secured most seats in
cabinet, agriculture went to the conservatives, giving them an equal share.
However, Mr Haider's supporters will control the key spending departments.
Mr Haider, who is not in the government but can bring it down when he likes,
has praised Hitler's "orderly employment policies" and lauded Waffen SS
veterans.
He has since apologised for the remarks "which were attributed to me";
yesterday,
though, he was in defiant mood. "I have no intention of wandering around
world
apologising for all kinds of things," he said.
The most extreme reprisal came from Israel, whose ambassador, Nathan Meron,
left Austria yesterday on the orders of the prime minister, Ehud Barak.
Finland suspended relations and Belgium put its ties on a lower footing.
France's defence minister postponed a meeting with his Austrian counterpart
and his department struck the first economic blow by cancelling an order for
six Austrian ambulances.
Austria's president meanwhile took every opportunity to stress his dismay.
He
barely looked at Mr Schüssel as he swore him in and kept eye contact with
the new
ministers to a minimum, giving the briefest of handshakes.
In a letter to the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal centre, which tracks
down
Nazi war criminals, Mr Klestil insisted he had no choice but to appoint the
coalition, whose members had won a majority in the lower house.
Mr Haider said his party had achieved an historic change "despite the
attempted
influence from abroad and violence on the streets". He expected the
protests to
calm down soon.
