Subject: [MC] Aha! I found the Vankin/Whalen citation
Date: Wednesday, February 23, 2000 8:47 PM

Dear People:
It's rainy out, just the right kind of day to rummage through the piles and
found exactly what I meant in a previous post.
"The 60 Greatest Conspiracies Of All Time" by Jonathan Vankin & John Whalen
(a signed copy too).
Chapter 9, Microfilm at 11; pages 67-72, uses material from Carl Bernstein's
"The CIA and the Media", from Rolling Stone, 20 October, 1977; Crewdson &
Treaster's "CIA: Secret Shaper of Public Opinion," NY Times, 25-27 December
1977; and Martin and Solomon's "Unreliable Sources: A Guide to Detecting
Bias in News Media" New York: Lyle Stuart, 1991.
Quote from page 72, . . End of story? Maybe not. Even though the
rationale for the earlier media-CIA partnership - Cold War-era "national
security" - is presumably dead and buried, a classified CIA report that
surfaced in 1992 would suggest that the affair continues. The report on CIA
"openness" stated that the Agency's public affairs office "now has
relationships with reporters from every major wire service, newspaper, news
weekly, and television network in the nation." Apparently these
relationships have been fruitful for the CIA, because they have "helped us
turn some 'intelligence failure' stories into 'intelligence success' stories
. . ." In many cases, the report continued, "we have persuaded reporters to
postpone, change, hold or even scrap stories that could have adversely
affected national security interests.

It sounds as if the Mighty Wurlitzer plays on.
