(fwd) From: Franklin Wayne Poley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Do you see how much this global agenda will transform both the educational and economic systems of the planet? That is even without the imminent "Robot-for-President" as a British Telecom researcher wrote in the latest issue of The Futurist that he expects by 2011, robots will be able to out-logic and out-learn humans. The robots I am talking about below are not logicians and thinkers. They are just rote teachers (like most human teachers). If the BT man is correct then the new Alife Form, superior to humankind and having more "vitality" will be here in just a decade. What does that do to the 2012 AD Election in USA? What if Japan or China were to run John Quincy Adding Machine at that time in a GLOBAL INTERNET ELECTION to parallel the US Election and make the US presidential candidates look even more like the idiots they are now? The winner would be President of the Planet. Dear Wendy: Further to your program last night on the "Paradox of Free Software (eg Linux) Being Used To Make Fortunes", let me give you another example which will soon dwarf the Linux Market. This is the market for "Educational Software" (also "free" in the sense that it is easily obtained and at little cost if not no-cost). Without glossing this up in pedagogical theory let me get right to the practical aspect of it. How many courses of an academic, scholarly nature can be put on computer disks? (whether HDD's, CD's or floppy disks doesn't matter). The correct answer is: MOST, IF NOT ALL, from introductory accountancy to medical anatomy. Presently there is a huge market for over-the-internet education as recent article in Georgia Straight informed us. We were told that about 1,000,000 US students now take courses over the Internet and the increase is phenomenal, having tripled from 1994 to 1997. Unexus U. in New Brunswick now offers MBA degrees 100% over-the-internet as you know. The new dictum is: "IF IT CAN BE TAUGHT BY HUMAN OVER THE INTERNET IT CAN BE TAUGHT BY ROBOT OVER THE INTERNET". In this case, robot just means whatever machinery it takes to present those courses on computer disks to the students. That could be Internet or it could be a classroom robot (I will be giving a workshop this summer at the ALIFE-7 Conference on "How To Make Xavier More Lively, Learned and Lucid Than Any Professor at CMU"). Now the marketing experts can consider the implications of TURNING EDUCATION INTO A COMMODITY. College courses are rather elusive. But college courses on computer disks become a commodity as tangible as pork bellies. If the planet can have a futures market for pork bellies, why not educational cd's? An educational cd (ECD) kind of "stands still" for the world to scrutinize it and improve upon it. Consider the examples above on introductory accountancy and medical anatomy. Since the world-wide educational market is enormous, the competition in ECD's will be great. Which introductory accountancy course will become recognized as the best in the world? Which one will be considered to be the most comprehensive, clear, useful? "Clear" means the ECD's with the best, most understandable explanations will win out. "Useful" means that ESP (Expert System Programming) will be incorporated into the ECD's. Thus a "spread sheet" program (ESP) could be combined with an accountancy program. A medical diagnosis ESP could be combined with a course on medical diagnosis. A geological ESP like PROSPECTOR could be combined with a course on geology. The quality of ECD's will soar once this new market is established and the costs will plummet due to great competition in pursuit of the HUGE profits (all from "free" software like Linux). The world will be left with a few very rich people on the supply side and millions of thankful student-recipients from all over the world. Costs of higher education within 5-10 years could well be 1% of today's costs with greatly improved quality. ACCESS to education will expand greatly. Why? Because to the owner of ECD software, it makes no difference if the student has the prerequisites or not. If you want to buy the software and have the money, you can buy it. I have issued a sort of "challenge" to Michael Gaffney, CEO of Unexus to have one of his teachers put out an ECD unit on allocation of assets and liabilities upon dissolution of a complex partnership. When I was a college student this was considered to be a very difficult and technical lesson at the senior undergraduate level. I would like to show how it can be "deconstructed" to plain language so that the average person with IQ 100 and no college education could understand it and how it can be combined with ESP so that any business partnership on the planet could use it for practical results. Having done that, I think people will understand what I am saying about this new "futures market". I am sure this market will arrive soon. However, the sooner the better, so I would welcome any ideas as to how to "kick start" it. How about some "demand" from the demand side of supply and demand? John Chambers, CEO of Cisco Systems has his "Netaid" program in conjunction with UNDP. If some UNDP representatives ask for a demonstration from Cisco, that would kick start the "technology transfer" he is talking about. How about putting all of Cisco's IT degree on ECD's? That would get it going!
