I was a kid right out of grad school.  I didn't really get to mix with anybody of the type you mention.  I was not astute enough to play the game, I virtually got fired after less than a year.  As for their techniques, I am not aware of the books or studies you allude to but I would suspect there are scads and scads of them in various educational annals of experimental psychology, both neurological and sociological varieties.  I was not aware that they purposely crafted an ad to contain subliminal messages.  I wonder if this technology is utilized more in the military than business realms.
