GOP Takes Another Budget Beating

“In an interview assessing the long fight over spending priorities, the
president said preventing approval of the $792 billion Republican tax-cut
plan was ‘the biggest victory of the budget.’ Meanwhile, the 296-135 House
vote on the big omnibus spending bill marks the second time Clinton and
Congress have gone around caps set in the 1997 budget accord. Borrowing
against Social Security funds will continue.”

Spin By Any Other Pol Smells Just As Bad

“Dennis J. Hastert, the lackluster leader of the do-nothing U.S. House of
Representatives actually had the balls to stand up in front of reporters
Thursday night and claim the 106th Congress had actually accomplished
something. Hastert must be auditioning for the Bill Clinton Liar's Hall of
Fame. While his incredible attempts to turn crap into something that doesn't
smell might not reach the audacity of ‘I did not have sex with that women,’
it still ranks pretty high on any sane person's lie-o-meter. ... Republican
leadership? An oxymoron at best and a sick joke at worst. These bozos
couldn't lead a pack of Cub Scouts off the Washington Mall with a roadmap and
a satellite GPS system. The 106th Congress is only half over, but they might
as well have stayed home and phoned it in. Better yet, we would be better off
if they went home and stayed there. .. Given this record, Denny Hastert must
have taken several tokes on some pretty strong weed before he could get up in
front of reporters Thursday night and claim, with a straight face, that he
and his party has accomplished anything. The pundits say the Speaker was
practicing the time-honored tradition of Washington ‘spin.’ Spin, my ass.
It
was a bald-faced lie.”

Running From Bill Like a Scalded Dog

“Humor writer Doug Gamble says, ‘It’s sad how far Gore will go to distance
himself from Clinton. Asked in a pop quiz to name the current U.S.
president, he said he didn’t know.’”

- Wall Street Journal, 11/19/99

“Alpha” Gore Following Bill’s Footsteps

“Vice President Al Gore, fearing a lack of funds next spring, is lining up
‘official’ events to have the government pay for his appearances. Aides for
Gore, utilizing what has become a classic office-holder campaign ploy, have
been meeting with Cabinet officials to schedule appearances for the vice
president to hand out grants, make speeches and stage photo opportunities at
government expense.”

Don’t Bet GOP House on W’s Coattails

“Democrats gloat over Joe Baca’s win in a House election this week in
California after rival Elia Pirozzi was endorsed by GOP presidential
front-runner Bush. ‘When it comes to coattails, the governor has no
clothes,’ says Democrat spokesman John Del Cecato.”

- “Washington Wire,” Wall Street Journal, 11/19/99

Ken Starr Wins Another Round

“Some unreported news from the impeachment vindication front: A three-judge
federal appeals court recently ruled that Ken Starr had not, contrary to
White House propaganda, illegally leaked grand jury secrets. Clinton lawyer
David Kendall then filed for a rehearing before the entire D.C. Circuit. He
lost 11-0.”

The Whining of America

“America has truly become a entitlement state. From sea to shining sea, our
beautiful land is filled with millions of people who believe the world owes
them something. We have to be the whiniest group of people on the planet.
The latest rash of irrationality concerns bank fees connected with usage of
automated teller machines. ... Some people think they deserve to use these
machines free of charge. This is not really surprising in country where
people believe government has a duty to provide for their every need from the
cradle to the grave. ... I hate ATM fees and believe they are excessive. But
the right to charge these fees cannot be questioned. ATMs cost money to
operate. But there is a good answer to the fees: Don’t use the machines
that charge you. It is very simple and keeps government out of the equation.”
