China increasing missiles facing Taiwan

Wednesday, March 08, 2000 18:00

[USDefense.com] -- The U.S. commander of the Pacific fleet warned on Tuesday
that China is increasing the amount of missiles it is deploying facing Taiwan
at a rate of about 50 per year.

However, Adm. Dennis Blair downplayed notions that China was preparing to
attack or invade Taiwan anytime in the near future. Blair called the
likelihood of such action "fairly low."

Yet in previously published military strategy papers, Beijing has said it
would eventually deploy about 600 short- and medium range missiles against
Taiwan, then use them to overwhelm Taiwanese defenses and air assets in
massive wave attacks.

Defense expert Charles Smith, a national security writer for
WorldNetDaily.com said such a plan was likely in a column published on
Wednesday.

Smith, who described two possible war scenarios with China -- one where
Beijing wins and another where the U.S. comes out on top -- used the massive
wave attack scenario to suggest a quick victory for Beijing. Smith said China
could also employ its 5,000 aircraft People's Liberation Army Air Force
planes against Taiwan.

In the Chinese victory scenario, Smith said "hundreds of missiles, and
thousands of MiGs (could) overwhelm the small Taiwanese Air Force. One or two
of the bases (would) continue to function but are soon swept aside by the
tide of" Chinese fighters and missiles.

But Blair, who visited the Chinese mainland earlier this month, said he
doesn't believe Beijing possesses the military might to invade, then control,
Taiwan.

Blair told a news conference Tuesday that although the U.S., China and Taiwan
have "adjusted" deployment of key military assets prior to Taiwan's Mar. 18
general elections, no one is seen to be preparing for "major action."

"There are some small variations but none of us is preparing for major
military moves there, and that's good," he said. Blair did not get into the
specifics of military deployments, however.

The U.S. admiral dodged a reporters question asking how long he thought it
would be before the mainland could prevail over the tiny island nation of
about 22 million.

Blair said, "That depends on what Taiwan and we do."

He added that the Clinton administration is still considering Taiwan's
military equipment requests, including Taiwan's request for Aegis-class
destroyers and frigates. Blair said he has yet to make a suggestion
concerning that request.
