-Caveat Lector- <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"> </A> -Cui Bono?- Candidate To Give Guns for Donations The Associated Press Friday, March 10, 2000; 7:41 a.m. EST SALLISAW, Okla. –– A congressional candidate planning to give away guns as part of his campaign calls it a perfect way to raise money and let people show their support for the right to bear arms. Mark Detro, seeking the Republican nomination for the 2nd Congressional District, said Thursday that people who donate $5 to his campaign will qualify to win a variety of guns. "We're seeing in Oklahoma an erosion of our firearms rights," Detro said. "This is a great way for people to get involved with a political issue." Detro said his plan had received the approval of the Federal Election Commission and Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson. That came as news to Edmondson's spokesman Gerald Adams. "Someone will be calling (Detro) to say he can't do this," Adams said Thursday. He said it would be illegal for the campaign to hold a raffle or lottery where money must be given to qualify for a prize. Detro said gun winners would receive a safety course from the National Rifle Association and would have to undergo background checks before receiving the firearm. He said two types of Ruger guns were donated by Guns Are Us, a Massachusetts gun broker, and he's contacted several manufacturers seeking donations of firearms. Detro's campaign announcement comes weeks before a scheduled appearance in Sequoyah County stemming from his arrest in January for alleged assault and battery with a deadly weapon. Detro, owner of the Sallisaw Inn, was arrested after police found a man bleeding from the head wandering outside the motel. The man told authorities that Detro had beaten him with a metal pipe.
