-Caveat Lector- <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"> </A> -Cui Bono?- New York Post-April 1, 2000 Editorial ONE LAW FOR THE CLINTONS What an interesting place the Clinton White House can be. When prosecutors and congressional investigators subpoena information about various shenanigans involving the president, the first lady and their assorted aides and hangers-on, the information mysteriously vanishes. Not until the public's interest has moved on to other matters -- often months or years later -- does the long-sought material suddenly turn up. But when it's the Clintons themselves who need material in order to discredit their foes, it always seems to be on hand. And before you can say "Slick Willie," it's out before the public -- even if, as a judge has now ruled, releasing the information violates the law. That's exactly what Bill Clinton & Co. did in a desperate effort to discredit Katherine Willey, the former presidential friend who claimed the First Groper forcibly pawed her in a hallway outside the Oval Office in 1993 when she went there to discuss a possible job. Right after Willey told her story on "60 Minutes" in 1998, the White House released a series of private letters she'd sent to the president. The Clintonites figured the letters' friendly tone would undermine her "60 Minutes" accusations. But U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth said that making those letters public constituted "a criminal violation of the Privacy Act." One might think that Bill Clinton -- already the first president ever held in contempt of court, not to mention the $90,000 fine, thanks to his relationship with Monica Lewinsky -- might be concerned about this further legal stain on his record. If you think that way, however, you don't know Bill Clinton. "I never thought ... about whether [the Privacy Act] applied or not," Clinton said Wednesday, adding that "it was the only way I knew to refute allegations against me." In other words, the hell with the law -- if we've got the ammunition, we're going to use it. By the way, according to the White House, Hillary Clinton also signed off on releasing the letters. Sadly, this approach has worked well for Bill Clinton, even as he makes clear his firm and arrogant belief that this president is above the law. Whether New Yorkers will sign on for six years of the same from the first lady is one of the more interesting questions that this fall's election will answer. ================================================================= Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> *Mike Spitzer* <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ~~~~~~~~ <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends Shalom, A Salaam Aleikum, and to all, A Good Day. ================================================================= <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
