A senior White House internal security official says he has
assumed control of hundreds of e-mails to and from Vice President
Al Gore's office; documents that could prove significant in
federal and congressional probes of 1996 campaign finance
improprieties.

Charles Easley, the top security officer, also said in a sworn
affidavit that he had taken possession of printouts of e-mails to
and from Monica Lewinsky and locked them in his office safe.
This is the first time the location of these printouts has been
revealed.

Meanwhile, the White House sought in another court document to
refute allegations that these materials had been tampered with or
were slated to be destroyed. "It is the current policy of EOP
[Executive Office of the President] to make back-up tapes of the
hard drive files of departed employee [sic] and not to destroy
those back-up tapes," White House lawyers said in an affidavit
submitted Monday evening to U.S. District Court in Washington,
D.C., a copy of which was obtained by FoxNews.com.

The White House statements did not indicate whether there had
previously been a policy to destroy old computer files.

The affidavits were submitted in connection with a civil suit
filed by Judicial Watch, a conservative legal activist group that
represents several Republicans whose FBI files were improperly
obtained by the Clinton White House. The office of the
Independent Counsel has determined that there is no evidence in
the so-called "Filegate" matter to warrant the filing of criminal
charges against anyone in the Clinton White House.

The location and safekeeping of the computer files has been a
subject of conjecture and controversy for months.

Sheryl Hall, a former Clinton White House computer specialist,
said in sworn testimony in the Judicial Watch suit that a staff
colleague told her the White House "plans to destroy these ...
tapes of the computer hard drives of departed Clinton White House
staffers."

The contents of the White House tapes, computer disk drives and
e-mails may prove significant in a Justice Department criminal
probe into possible campaign finance abuses during the 1996
campaign involving Gore. These materials are also being sought
in the Judicial Watch civil suit.

A Justice Department spokesman said he could not comment on
whether investigators would now seek the materials in Easely's
possession.

Gore says he did nothing illegal during the 1996 fundraising
effort. He has said his Republican critics are "chasing their
tails" in their efforts to discredit him.

The materials cover a period in 1997 when Gore and his advisers
were seeking to answer questions about allegations of improper
activities, including Gore's telephone fundraising solicitations
and a fundraiser he attended at a Buddhist temple in Los Angeles.
