Nothing 'causes' anyone to drink or to abuse drugs. There are any number of
reasons a person may give as a COP OUT for becoming
addicted, but it still comes down to the person's choice. I suspect your
friend would have become an alcoholic even if she'd never
had an abortion, the abortion is her convenient 'justification' for her
decision to abuse alcohol. >>

I tend to agree with you that a person makes a decision to overindulge in
drinking, drugs, etc. I also think that sometimes something causes one to
drink etc. excessively. This person may be weak, or just can't deal with
guilt, pressure, or perceived inadequacies. Everyone deals with bad things
in life differently. Some people overeat or nearly starve themselves because
of things that happen to them. If you've ever talked to a psychiatrist, they
seem to think that all unordinary behavior stems from childhood, at least
that is what they investigate first. I have a distrust for psychiatry in
general, but sometimes they may have a point. It is psychiatrists associated
with AA that think excessive drinking is motivated by something other than a
desire to get drunk (personal problems).
