EDITOR'S NOTE: We congratulate our friend Larry P. Arnn on his appointment as president of Hillsdale College. In the wake of indignities suffered under its previous leadership, Mr. Arnn will, most certainly, restore Hillsdale to its rightful standing as one of the nation's leading conservative institutions of higher learning. ______--------********O********--------______ THIS WEEK'S FEATURE Gun Owners of America is "The only no-compromise gun lobby in Washington," says Ron Paul (R-TX). And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure. " --Thomas Jefferson, 1787 ______--------********O********--------______ THE GOOD NEWS "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." (Ephesians 6:12) ______--------********O********--------______ FAITH IN BRIEF "We are in a cultural war, and at the center of it is a major offensive against Christianity. Anyone who does not believe this is in denial. It is in-your-face obvious to those who read the paper, listen to the radio, watch television, or go to the movies -- and think about what messages are being delivered. The Constitution no longer protects us. It has become, in the hands of unaccountable, power-corrupted judges, an instrument of our oppression." --Linda Bowles ______--------********O********--------______ FAMILY IN BRIEF "(L)iberals ... are forever kvetching about federal laws that require the deportation of aliens who actually commit felonies in this country. Let a criminal wash ashore and the Left sees him as part of the American dream. But if it's a little boy who lands on our shores only because -- by all accounts -- his mother simply wished for him to grow up in freedom, and liberals can't see him deported fast enough. .. The Left has never thought parents important enough to be informed if their minor children have abortions, perennially opposing parental notification laws. Indeed, fathers are so irrelevant under the law that they have no say over the decision of whether or not their own children will be aborted. Elian's mother could have aborted Elian without input from the father, but she can't give him freedom without the father's consent." --Ann Coulter ______--------********O********--------______ OPINION IN BRIEF "Ultimately, support for the death penalty must be grounded on the love of justice and an unqualified respect for the dignity of innocent human life. ...[I]t is an imperative of the respect for life that we retain the death penalty as an element of law in certain limited cases. If we do not, we risk applying a corrosive relativism to our national respect for life." --Alan Keyes ______--------********O********--------______ POLITICAL FUTURES "The sure means of restoring and securing our liberties is not having this or that politician in office but, as the founders said, in fostering a public sentiment that is implacably and radically opposed to any attempt by the power elite to take what is not theirs." --Llewellyn H. Rockwell Jr. ______--------********O********--------______ FOR THE RECORD Worth repeating on April 20, 2000, one year since two sociopaths left 13 dead in the Columbine massacre.... On Thursday, May 27, 1999, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a murder victim at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness. The following is a portion of the transcript: Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers. The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used. Neither was it the 'NCA', (The National Club Association). The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart. In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore, I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent. I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy. It was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best. This was written before I knew I would be speaking here today. Your laws ignore our deepest needs, Your words are empty air. You've stripped away our heritage, You've outlawed simple prayer. Now gunshots fill our classrooms, And precious children die. You seek for answers everywhere, And ask the question, "Why?" You regulate restrictive laws, Through legislative creed. And yet you fail to understand, That God is what we need! Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, soul, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc. Spiritual influences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in doing so, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs, politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to the erosion of our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts. Political posturing and restrictive legislation are not the answers. The young people of our nation hold the key. There is a spiritual awakening taking place that will not be squelched! We do not need more religion. We do not need more gaudy television evangelists spewing out verbal religious garbage. We do not need more million dollar church buildings built while people with basic needs are being ignored. We do need a change of heart and a humble acknowledgment that this nation was founded on the principle of simple trust in God! As my son, Craig, lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, he did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America, and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred regard for legislation that protects your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA -- I give to you a sincere challenge. Dare to examine your own heart before casting the first stone! My daughter's death will not be in vain. The young people of this country will not allow that to happen! ______--------********O********--------______ POLICY PAGES & POINTS OF INTEREST (NOTE: For our subscribers with WWW access, if the URL line breaks, please select, copy and paste the entire link address into your browser's target address field.) "In the speech in which I declared my candidacy, I focused on global warming, ozone depletion and the ailing global environment and declared that these issues -- along with nuclear arms control -- would be the principal focus of my campaign." 2. "No one knows what will happen as a result of ozone depletion, the greenhouse effect and other environmental problems that cannot yet be foreseen. And, as nuclear proliferation has shown, new technology cannot be kept out of the hands of dictators and irresponsible Third World leaders." 3. "Artificial needs have been created. ... Advertising and marketing techniques have been developed that make many people feel they need things that their grandparents never desired or even dreamed of. ... It seems for many people, maybe the majority, these artificial forms .. are insufficient. A theme that appears repeatedly in the writings of the social critics of the second half of the 20th century is the sense of purposelessness that afflicts many people in modern society." 4. "Whenever any technology is used to mediate our experience of the world, we gain power but we also lose something in the process. The increased productivity of assembly lines in factories, for examples, requires many employees to repeat the identical task over and over until they lose any feeling of connection to the creative process -- and with it their sense of purpose." 5. "Like the Sorcerer's Apprentice, who learned how to command inanimate objects to serve his whims, we too have set in motion forces more powerful than we anticipated and that are harder to stop than start." 6. "Technological progress marches in only one direction. It can never be reversed. Once a technological innovation has been introduced, people usually become dependent on it, so that they can never again do without it, unless it is replaced by some still more advanced innovation." 7. "'Oh,' say the technophiles, 'Science is going to fix all that!' We will conquer famine, eliminate psychological suffering, make everybody healthy and happy!" 8. "Some argue that a new ultimate technology, whether nuclear energy or genetic engineering, will solve the problem. ... We have also fallen victim to a kind of technological hubris, which tempts us to believe that our new powers may be unlimited. We dare to imagine that we will find technological solutions for every technologically induced problem. ... Technological hubris tempts us to lose sight of our place in the natural order and believe that we can achieve whatever we want." 9. "Very widespread in modern society is the search for 'fulfillment.' .. (Yet) for the majority of people whose main goal is fulfillment, (technology) does not bring completely satisfactory fulfillment." 10. "Industrial civilization's great engines of distraction still seduce us with a promise of fulfillment. Our new power to work our will upon the world can bring with it a sudden rush of exhilaration. .. But that exhilaration is fleeting. It is not true fulfillment."
