MARSHALS TO TAKE ELIAN SATURDAY: CBS Source: NewsMax.com http://www.newsmax.com/ With Carl Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff For the story behind the story... Friday April 21, 2000; 12:27 PM EDT Marshals to Take Elian Saturday: CBS http://www.newsmax.com/showinsidecover.shtml?a=2000/4/21/112603 The Clinton administration could arrest six-year-old Elian Gonzalez and turn him over to accused wife-beater Juan Miguel Gonzalez as early as Saturday, CBS News reports in its latest radio broadcasts. Jose Garcia Pedrosa, attorney for Elian's Miami family, said that federal marshals can expect no cooperation from family members when zero hour arrives. "Without a psychological evaluation that says that, that is in the best interests of the boy — in the opinion of a professional, not a lawyer or an immigration official, that's correct," said Pedrosa. Pedrosa voiced concerns that officials have done nothing to investigate multiple accounts of spousal and child abuse against Mr. Gonzalez. "When a child makes allegations of this sort in this country, we don't believe the child and we don't disbelieve the child," the lawyer said. "We evaluate the allegations to determine whether a professional thinks they are true." On Thursday President Clinton cited this week's ruling by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals which prohibits Juan Miguel Gonzalez from leaving the country until the court fully adjudicates his son's plea for asylum. "There is now no conceivable argument for (Gonzalez) not being able to be reunited with his son," said Clinton. But neither the president nor Attorney General Janet Reno has said what they would do if Juan Miguel Gonzalez and his Cuban handlers decide to ignore the court and sneak the child out of the country. If Mr. Gonzalez takes his boy back to where's he's been staying, the Cuban diplomatic residence in Bethesda, Maryland, he will be on Cuban soil and beyond the reach of U.S. law. Last week The New York Times reported that Cuban officials said they would waive diplomatic immunity on the Bethesda property, but never filed a formal request with the State Department to do so. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
