Yes these were the wrong charges....the question is:
Why were these the charges?
Why weren't the right charges brought against him?
Implicit in these questions is another question:
Why wasn't there a real trial with witnesses in the Senate?
Every lawyer who has ever handled a traffic ticket for a client
knows and understands "Why?"
Here is a description of the deal that was made to get
Clinton "off the hook".
To illustrate - let's say you get a speeding ticket.
They clocked you on radar...you were 20 MPH over the limit.
They've gotcha.
So you call a lawyer who handles tickets and turn it over to him or her.
The lawyer simply makes a standard deal with the traffic court,
it's done all over the country every day.
1. The Court changes the charge against you from speeding to
a "non-moving violation".
2. The lawyer enters an automatic guilty plea.
3. You pay the fine for the non-moving violation and of course
you pay the lawyer for "fixing" your ticket.
So, the Court got paid.....the lawyer got paid.....and you benefitted
because non-moving violations don't make your insurance rates go up.
The House and the Senate simply played a variation of this game.
They let Clinton plead guilty to a "non-impeachable offense".
Let that sink in for a moment.
They made all kinds of speeches....did all kinds of blustering
and posturing in front of the cameras.....but they made a deal
to let Clinton plead guilty to a "non-impeachable offense"....
just like the "non-moving violation".
There is nothing in our Constitution about presidents having sex
with interns in the Oval Office. So the so-called news media
focused attention entirely on Clinton's sexual adventures with
Monica.....and the public ate it up!
The evening TV news and the papers made it seem like
Monica was the entire story.
It was even better than the daytime TV Soap Operas.
The attitude of most people was: "They shouldn't remove Clinton
from office for having sex with Monica nor for lying about it."
This prevailing attitude made it easy for Congress to let him off.
So Clinton went on TV and admitted he had "mislead people".
He said he was sorry. Notice that he never did really come out
and confess, he just made some oblique references.
That was his "guilty plea" to the "non-impeachable offense".
Remember that many senators repeated these very words.
They made speeches about Clinton's "reprehensible behavior",
but said it did not constitute an impeachable offense.
General Knight nails it when he said these were the wrong charges.
They absolutely were.
It was planned that way.
And it worked like a charm.
