The Democrats’ Message

Taking inspiration from our favorite poet and all-around good guy, Lyn
Nofziger, we’ve come up with a Democrat version of TEDS 2000. Their
message/themes appear to be: Tax hikes, Untruths, Ruining education, Defense
cuts and Sowing race hatred. Let’s see ... that would be: TURDS. Yep, I
think we have our winner.

Taxpayers’ Friends & Foes

“U.S. Senator John McCain teamed up with fellow ‘Taxpayers' Friends’ in 1999
to pull pro-taxpayer scores out of a three-year nosedive, according to the
widely-anticipated annual Rating of Congress released today by the
non-partisan National Taxpayers Union (NTU). ... The highest scorers in the
House and Senate, respectively, were Ron Paul with 89 percent and John McCain
(R-AZ) with 87 percent. At the bottom of the heap in the House and Senate,
respectively, were Solomon Ortiz (D-TX) at 7 percent, and Patty Murray (D-WA)
at 1 percent -- the lowest score recorded for a Senator since 1975.”

this year’s rankings by going to:

Have You Seen This Democrat?

The fine folks at the Republican National Committee are keeping track of how
many days it’s been since Bill Bradley refused to endorse Al Gore for the
Democrat nomination for president. Through Friday, the count stands at 69
days. Forget “Where’s Waldo.” Where’s Bill?

I Want One of These T-Shirts (X-Large)

Our waitress at lunch yesterday told us her mom went somewhere in Florida (I
think) and said she saw t-shirts which said something to the effect of: “My
Mom Voted Republican And All I Got Was ... Lower Taxes, A Better Education
And A Brighter Future.” Anyone seen these? Or know where to get some?

Nothing to Offer But Fear Itself

“Hypocrisy is afoot, but that is not the worst of it. In his attack on George
W. Bush's Social Security proposal, Al Gore is employing the worst kinds of
scare tactics, the same sort of demagoguery that has thwarted serious reform
repeatedly and led us to a point where crisis lurks not too many hops down
the road.”

- Capitol Hill Blue, 5/18/00

Your Money, Your Choice

“Abandoning his usual caution, George W. Bush shifted Social Security to
center-stage. He recently embraced Social Security choice: allowing younger
Americans the option to devote part of their payroll taxes to privately-owned
accounts. ... Democrats predictably will warn of Bush's ‘risky scheme’ to
herd Granny and her friends into Merrill Lynch offices across America with
neither food nor blankets. But Bush's proposal, for starters, is 100 percent
voluntary. Republicans simply must repeat the mantra: ‘Your money, your
choice. Your money, your choice.’ Second, Wall Street no longer is the
exclusive playground of the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts. An estimated 48.8
percent of U.S. families own equities, either directly or through mutual
funds. TV news channels constantly intersperse sports scores with updates on
the Dow Jones and NASDAQ indices. Such information interests both CEOs and
average viewers. That's why in the age of IRAs and 401-Ks, the left's
class-warfare rhetoric is as cutting-edge as Arlo Guthrie.”

Why Do Most Blacks Vote Democrat Again?

“Members of the African-American leadership network Project 21 are pleased
with the bipartisan progress now underway toward privatizing Social Security
and making it fair for black Americans. Black Americans are the most at risk
under the current Social Security regime. A recent survey found only 28% of
black households have enough saved for even the most minimal retirement
comfort. Furthermore, since black men have a lower average life expectancy
than the rest of the population, they are less likely to get back what they
have paid into Social Security. Because benefits are not transferable, their
families will receive nothing when a black male head of household dies.

“Social Security reform is now receiving strong bipartisan support, and may
become a major issue in this fall's presidential election. Presumed
Republican presidential candidate Governor George W. Bush of Texas announced
a proposal this week to let workers invest a portion of their payroll taxes
rather than having the government make all the choices. The proposal would
keep current benefits intact for those now receiving Social Security and not
raise payroll taxes. Bush is the first nominee to suggest privatizing Social
Security since Barry Goldwater in 1964.”

- David Almasi, “Project 21,” 5/18/00

Clinton Fatigue Hits the Networks

“Lame Duck Watch: Only NBC and Fox have agreed to carry Bill Clinton's five
minute address on the China trade vote scheduled for next week. CBS and ABC
have apparently decided to stick with their regular programming. ABC
doesn't want to interrupt its 37th episode of ‘Millionaire’ - of the week.
CBS can't possibly break away for five minutes from a made-for-TV movie of
how Paul and Linda McCartney met. True.”

- Rich Galen, “Mullings,” 5/19/00 (At press time, rumor has it Clinton was
cancelling his nationwide address altogether because polling showed that if
he came out in support of the proposal in a national address, he would
actually LOSE votes. Who says Clinton fatigue has come and gone? You were
right, Dan.)

Mama’s, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Orioles

“Just to close off the possibility of Elian (Gonzalez) growing up to be a
baseball player, the Baltimore Orioles have announced that it will refuse to
hire any Cuban baseball player who defects. The baseball team is owned by
plaintiff lawyer and Democratic Party contributor Peter Angelos, a plutocrat
by dint of winning a claim to Maryland’s share of the tobacco litigation
payoff. The club’s Syd Thrift says they don’t want to ruin the ‘goodwill’
between the two countries by hiring anyone who’s fled Cuba.”

- Wall Street Journal editorial, 5/19/00
