from the Genetic Modification List by CS. I think the really interesting, or frightening thing about this topic is not how it affects apes but how it affects us. If we are able to alter the genetic makeup of our own children at what point will they be considered not human ? I think this also relates to the other item about the creation of 'castes', how long before only people with a certain genetic makeup (as per 'Gattica') will be allowed to do certain jobs. Probably of more pressing concern is the question of insurance and medical benefits, what insurance company is going to touch you if you have a genetic tendency towards some long term debilitating disease. Following on from that you may have a state welfare system that ends up only treating the long term seriously ill, and how long before people object to paying for something they themselves are probably not going to use. Because of genetic profiling it will enable insurance companies to target those with a small chance of serious disease, and therefore offer them smaller premiums, making them more attractive, and less likely that those people would use a state system.
