Pope Insists on Catholic Opposition to Gay
Marriages
By Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul II reaffirmed
the Roman Catholic Church's teaching against gay marriages Thursday, saying that
only a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman could form the basis of a
family.
``Attempts to define the family as something other than
a solemnized lifelong union of man and woman which looks to the birth and
nurture of children are bound to prove destructive,'' the pope
said.
The 80-year-old leader of the world's 1 billion
Catholics also reaffirmed the church's stand against abortion and euthanasia,
saying the assumption that both were rights that should be protected by law was
a contradiction of human dignity.
He said the church's defense of the traditional family
was ''not a matter of attachment to a bygone cultural model which refuses to
face facts.''
In a speech to New Zealand's new ambassador to the
Vatican, the pope said the church's position was based ``precisely on a
recognition of a fundamental truth.''
That was that the family is the fundamental cell
of society and a traditional family was the best place for children to learn the
skills required for life. He suggested new forms of family structures were
weaker and less stable.
``The facts suggest a logic that is clear and
certain,'' the pope said. ``Weak families mean a society unable to sustain its
members, especially the young, in the building of the common good,'' he
said.
``Individuals and even social structures are enfeebled
by forms of egoism and escapism which leave little room for commitment,
self-giving love, and solidarity with the weaker members of society,'' he
said.

The Awful Sin of Pride
Pride is at the very top of the list of things God
hates. "These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto
him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart
that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a
false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren"
(Proverbs 6:16-19).

The pope's comments came as a dispute raged in Italy
over plans for a massive gay pride rally in Rome this summer. It has been
opposed by Catholic and rightist groups.
Prime Minister Giuliano Amato sparked unrest within his
own center-left coalition Wednesday when he said the rally was ''inopportune''
because it coincided with the Catholic Church's 2000 Holy Year.
Those opposed to the rally want it to be postponed
until next year.
The Catholic Church teaches that homosexual tendencies
are not sinful but that homosexual acts are.
In the past, the Vatican has contested resolutions by
the European parliament to allow gays to marry and adopt children.
Gay groups have often attacked the Vatican's stand on
homosexuals as discrimination and a human rights violation.
In his speech, the pope also reaffirmed the church's
opposition to abortion and euthanasia, saying that no human legislation made
them right.
``The assumption that abortion and euthanasia are human
rights deserving legislative sanctions is seen by the Holy See as a
contradiction which amounts to a denial of human dignity which the law is
supposed to protect,'' he said.
``A society will be judged on the basis of how it
treats its weakest members and among the most vulnerable are surely the unborn
and the dying,'' he said.
The Vatican hoped the diplomatic and political
communities would carry out a ``profound reflection'' on those issues as the
world began the third millennium.
