Mother Teresa statue tangled in UN protocol UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations has denied a report it rejected a gift from Albania of a statue of the late Mother Teresa -- but proved in the process that even a near saint's likeness can run afoul of UN protocol. A UN spokesman on Friday said the Albanian UN mission ''has, in fact, been consulting with the UN Arts committee with a view to presenting a gift.'' ''There has been some discussion about a presentation of a statue of Mother Teresa, but there is nothing formal on the table right now,'' spokesman Fred Eckhard insisted, denying a report that an offer had actually been been made and turned down on artistic grounds. ''We have no opinion on the quality of the statue in question,'' he added. But hinting that protocol was the real issue, he said the United Nations was ''waiting to hear from Albania about a gift which, according to established practice,'' he pointedly noted, ''should be representative of the culture or art of the state presenting it.'' He then recalled that Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, the capital of what is now the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia, adding, ''therein lies the rub.'' He was delicately questioning whether a statue of an ethnic Albanian born in Macedonia but of Indian nationality, who spent most of her life ministering to the poor in India, would be ''representative of the culture or art'' of Albania.
