1. Barak Gov't Nearing End

Likud MK Sylvan Shalom tonight announced that at least 61 MKs
(over half of the 120 Knesset members) will vote for a law
calling for early elections, on Wednesday. Wednesday's vote is a
"preliminary ballot," the first of three Knesset votes
necessitated to pass a law. If this law passes the preliminary
vote on Wednesday, it will spell the beginning of the end of the
Barak administration. Barak will have no choice but to come to
terms with the Likud and pick a date, probably within a few
months, for new elections for Prime Minister and Knesset.

The major breakthrough seems to have occurred when Barak gave
orders to halt all negotiations with the Shas party concerning
funding of the Shas educational system "El HaMa'ayan." Shas has
reportedly promised that all of its 17 Knesset members will vote
in favor of early elections. The majority is promised with Shas,
together with Yisrael B'Aliyah (Natan Sharansky) and the NRP, and
the opposition parties, voting for early elections.

Barak was elected last May for a four year term of office.
