Cardiopulmonary disease is the number one killer in the U.S.
but it wasn't always so.
Before 1910, heart and artery disease wasn't even a major cause of death.
Obviously something changed.
Something in the environment or some change in diet or nutrition changed.
What was it?
It wasn't because suddenly cities started having "smog".
In industrial cities there was a lot of factory smoke and particulates,
but not "smog" as it is constituted today with a lot of car exhaust fumes.
What was it?
At the time of World War I, major chemical companies
started producing large amounts of chlorine.
Chlorine is a highly poisonous gas.
It was used as a weapon in the war.
Starting about the time the war ended,
U.S. cities started using chlorine to kill bacteria in
public water supplies.
It worked.
Chlorine does kill germs.
But it also does something else.
Chlorine acts in combination with saturated fats
to produce a hard coating on the inside of arteries and
blood vessels. This coating is called "plaque".
This causes "hardening of the arteries".
It's also called "Cardiopulmonary disease"
and/or atherosclerosis.
