Vote on WTO Withdrawal!

A House vote on H. J. Res 90, a bill "Withdrawing the approval of the United
States from the Agreement establishing the World Trade Organization," is
scheduled for Wednesday, June 21st.

H. J. Res. 90 is a critically important piece of legislation, since it would
get the United States completely out of the World Trade Organization and
repeal the 1994 legislation implementing the agreement. When asked about the
importance of getting out of the WTO in an interview in The New American
magazine, Representative Jack Metcalf (R-WA), a co-sponsor of H. J. Res 90,
said:

My thinking on this matter can be summed up in one word, sovereignty. Our
nation's sovereignty is at stake. I want negotiations between our nation and
any other nation, even China, to be conducted on a one-to-one basis. Not
arranged by groups and organizations which, once you join them, you've
already committed to do everything that has already been agreed to. This is
the only way we can protect the people of the United States. There are a lot
of very powerful forces out there that would like to do things their way and
not allow our nation to act in its own interests. The World Trade
Organization is one of them.

Let's be brutally frank: There is not currently much support for this
resolution. It has only 9 cosponsors. The House Ways and Means Committee
voted 35-0 to report the bill adversely (that is, recommend the rejection of)
to the entire House.

Only a wave of communications from constituents will convince Congress to
pass H. J. Res. 90. It is too late to write. You must call, fax, or e-mail
your support of this bill to your Congressman IMMEDIATELY. Tell your
Congressman that the WTO not only undermines U.S. sovereignty - it is also
economically harmful to Americans because it benefits the multinational
corporations at the expense of American workers. The recent vote by the House
to grant permanent Normal Trade Relations to China paves the way for the
admission of China to the WTO. This will further undermine the
competitiveness of U.S.-made goods on the world market.

Don't delay! Contact your Congressman now!
