WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Thai businesswoman Pauline Kanchanalak, a
key figure in the investigation of foreign money raised in the
1996 reelection campaign of President Clinton and Vice President
Al Gore, agreed Wednesday to plead guilty to campaign
finance-related offenses.

The U.S. Justice Department said Kanchanalak and her
sister-in-law, Duangnet Kronenberg, who also agreed to plead
guilty, decided to cooperate in its long-running investigation of
campaign abuses during the 1996 election cycle.

In the plea deal filed in federal court in Washington, D.C.,
Kanchanalak agreed to plead guilty to two criminal counts that
accused her of causing more than $690,000 in foreign money to be
contributed to the Democratic Party and other political
committees between 1992 and 1996.

One count charged her with participating in a conspiracy to cause
false statements to be made with the Federal Election Commission,
the agency that regulates campaign finances.

According to the charges, Kanchanalak conspired to use foreign
funds to make illegal political contributions to the Democratic
National Committee (DNC) and other campaign committees.

All the illegal contributions were made on checks from the
accounts of Kronenberg and Kronenberg's mother, according to the
charges. Part of the funds for the contributions were provided
by a company that had Kanchanalak as its president.

According to the charges, Kanchanalak sought to gain favor with
the DNC and gain attendance to fund-raising and political events
with Clinton, members of his administration and prominent members
of the business community.

More than $457,000 of the illegal contributions were provided to
the DNC and five state Democratic party committees in connection
with a White House "coffee" that Clinton attended June 18, 1996,
the Justice Department said.

It said the second count charged Kanchanalak with causing her
company -- Ban Chang International (USA) Inc. -- to make an
illegal $20,000 corporate contribution to the DNC in 1994.

Kronenberg agreed to plead guilty to one count charging her with
causing the company to make an illegal $10,000 corporate
contribution to the DNC in 1996, the Justice Department said.

Under the plea deal, the Justice Department will not seek any
prison time for Kronenberg. Kanchanalak faces a maximum of six
years in prison. but under federal sentencing guidelines it was
unclear how much time she might receive.

Kanchanalak and Kronenberg were scheduled to enter the guilty
pleas in court Friday, the Justice Department said.
