This description shows that the 'banana republic' label IS very apt.
If you look at most countries in Latin America, you have a well-to-do
elite calling the shots (figuratively and literally).

The above description sounds very much like Cuba under Batista....a
rich ruling elite with investments listed on the NYSE...
