This reminds me of a story I heard back in my days as a library
assistant: The FBI wanted to see the borrower record of, I believe it
was St. Peter's College in New Jersey (it was definitely a Catholic
college); it had something to do with Communism or Vietnam War
protests. The head librarian, a nun, demanded a search warrant. The FBI
said they would be back the next day with it. This was back in the days
when records were kept on little cards in the book pocket that the
borrower signed. After the library closed, the head librarian sent the
rest of the staff home, and she stayed in the library all night,
pulling every single card out of every single book, and destroying
them. I don't know whether or not this story actually happened, but it
does illustrate the degree to which librarians value the
confidentiality of the borrower. The only censorship that I ever saw
practiced at the library at which I worked was that children younger
than junior high were not allowed to check out books from the adult
section without their parent's permission. I don't have a problem with
that; IMHO parents should be paying attention to what their children
read.
