The June 5 memo, obtained by The Washington Times, was written
for Energy Secretary Bill Richardson by the department's acting
policy director, Melanie Kenderdine, just as a public outcry was
rising over gas prices as high as $2.50 a gallon for the
reformulated gasoline that the Environmental Protection Agency is
requiring in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas this summer.
The memo came to light as oil prices surged again Thursday and
federal energy experts repeated warnings that more gas-price
spikes are possible this summer, particularly on the East and
West coasts, because of tight supplies.
Still, the Senate declined for a second time this year to
temporarily ease the burden on consumers by suspending the
18.4-cent federal gasoline tax until fall. >>
This stuff is really funny. While researching something totally unrelated, I
stumbled onto the web site of a consortium of oil producers in the United
States. A part of their material were some position papers written by and
for their members. I recall that one said Bradley was an unacceptable
candidate, one said the same for McCain, and one for Gore. Since I found
nothing complaining about Dubya and being aware that the Bush family are
firmly entrenched in "oil," I assumed they were sort of saying, "VOTE FOR
DUBYA." In the same bunch of papers, I found one that was dated in February
2000 (the l0th if I remember correctly) which said that oil producers had
lobbied the Clinton Administration to stop discussions with OPEC about
raising oil production and sales to the United States, because the oil
producers wanted an opportunity to raise prices and garner more profits. I
don't know whether the Clinton Administration did as the oil producers
wanted, but from the resultant prices at the pumps, it would appear that the
Democrats can be just as sweet to the oil companies as the Republicans,
although the Republicans usually manage to outdo them. Further, anyone who
is expecting the Senate to remove a tax that gets money from the average
citizen should look into purchasing the Brooklyn Bridge. Prudy
