US envoy wages war on 'Patriot'
By Hugh Davies, Entertainment Correspondent
Frank Johnson: Notebook
PHILIP LADER, the American ambassador to London, yesterday stepped into the war
over Mel Gibson's version of revolutionary history in The Patriot, saying the
Australian star may not have furthered Washington's relationship with Britain.
The film, about the fight for independence, has Redcoats hanging old people
from trees and burning others in their churches, breaching every rule of combat
in trying to hold the colonies for the monarchy. Hollywood, as the diplomat
said, had "rarely let the facts get in the way of stories that the producers
think will sell at the box office".
He added: "I believe any schoolchild knows that 18th-century soldiers played
more by the rules than their modern-day counterparts - and that this is a great
deal of mythology and exaggeration, and that Mel Gibson and the producers
sought to tiptoe around history."
But he said: "The perpetuation of myths and the exaggeration of stories does
not serve our countries well." He was not going to "encourage others" to see
the film, which opened yesterday in London. It has taken 45 million at box
offices in America. Asked on BBC Radio 4's Today programme if The Patriot was
damaging to British-American ties, he replied: "It could be."
Mr Lader trod carefully, as his mentor, Bill Clinton, loves his trips to Los
Angeles, and often has stars such as Barbra Streisand and Tom Hanks to stay at
the White House. But the envoy is known for his attachment to Britain and its
people.
Spike Lee, the American director, has also criticised the Gibson film.
On the same programme, Lee, who has already attacked the film for ignoring
slavery, said: "You guys should be upset, because the British are portrayed
like like SS stormtroopers. I despise the film. It is what Hollywood does best:
it rewrites history."
The maker of acclaimed films such as Malcolm X and Clockers said: "This is
business as usual. You'd think, at the beginning of a new century, we'd go in
another direction. But they're still doing the same old thing as they were
doing in the first 100 years of cinema. We're at the mercy of the Hollywood
machine. They could have told the truth and the film would have been just as
successful."

The libertarian therefore considers one of his prime educational
tasks is to spread the demystification and desanctification of the
State among its hapless subjects. His task is to demonstrate
repeatedly and in depth that not only the emperor but even the
"democratic" State has no clothes; that all governments subsist
by exploitive rule over the public; and that such rule is the reverse
of objective necessity. He strives to show that the existence of
taxation and the State necessarily sets up a class division between
the exploiting rulers and the exploited ruled. He seeks to show that
the task of the court intellectuals who have always supported the State
has ever been to weave mystification in order to induce the public to
accept State rule and that these intellectuals obtain, in return, a
share in the power and pelf extracted by the rulers from their deluded
subjects.
