Via cyberspace, sex may be a riskier affair

People who use the Internet to find sexual partners may be at greater risk of
sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, according to a new study.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association,
surveyed 856 clients of an HIV counselling and testing centre in Denver,
Colorado, between last September and April this year to examine whether use
of the Internet to solicit sexual partners was a risk factor for STDs.
The clients completed a detailed HIV risk test and an Internet questionnaire.
In the latter, clients were asked whether they had logged on to the Internet
with the intention of seeking a sex partner.
Clients who answered no were referred to as offline clients.
Clients who answered affirmatively, dubbed online seekers, were then asked
questions including whether they had successfully solicited a sex partner via
the Internet, and whether a condom was used. The Internet responses were then
linked to the HIV risk test responses.
The researchers concluded that online seekers were more likely to have had a
previous STD than offline clients, thus increasing their risk of acquiring
future STDs.
They said the study showed the Internet played a clear role in the
solicitation of risky sexual partners.
