Hackers Scramble Tom Clancy's Brain!

Or, the evil Michael Ovtiz takes more revenge on the godly Michael Eisner.

TOM CLANCY, the godfather of the techno-thriller, surprised the publishing
world yesterday by switching his £138 million fiction empire to the care of
Michael Ovitz, once Hollywood's most powerful wheeler-dealer.

In what insiders said was "a shock" to his long-time agent, Robert Gottlieb,
the author defected to Ovitz, notorious for his dealings with film studios
and wooing of star clients. Clancy joins Robin Williams, the actor, Minnie
Driver, the actress, and the directors, Martin Scorsese and Sydney Pollack.

Ovitz was the first agent to package actors, directors and producers from his
own stable and sell them to the studios. He cultivated an image of ruthless
omnipotence in helping celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Barbra Streisand and
Tom Hanks. After changing the way Hollywood did business, Ovitz moved to a $5
million-a-year (£3.5 million) job as Walt Disney president, replacing Frank
Wells, who was killed in a helicopter crash.

However, studio boss Michael Eisner fired him after 14 months. Ovitz is now
stirring up a storm, using his £69 million severance pay to pursue a
multi-media dream with his fledging Artists Management Group to represent
actors, directors and writers. The move is creating alarm among established
agents who view it as a thinly-disguised agency bent on stealing their top
talent.

The deal with Clancy is likely to add to the paranoia of rivals as Gottlieb
had represented the writer at the William Morris organisation since spying
the galleys of his first novel The Hunt for Red October. The agent did much
to build Clancy into a brand name, securing a £27 million contract for his
last novels, Rainbow Six two years ago, and The Bear and The Dragon, out
later this month.

Gottlieb also secured a £17 million deal three years ago for the author's Red
Storm Entertainment, set up to specialise in computer gaming. The American,
Ben Affleck, is taking the role of Clancy's long-time hero, Jack Ryan, in the
latest movie of his work, The Sum of All Fears. Clancy, a postman's son and a
former insurance salesman, is noted for doing what he "damn well pleases", as
is Ovitz. His move reflects what Variety, the trade paper, calls current
"migratory habits of hugely successful writers".
