Giving Credit Where It’s Due
“It is true that Bill and Al deserve the credit for our excellent economy.
Bill Gates and Alan Greenspan, that is.”

Tell Us Something We Didn’t Know
“To say the news media are biased against the Republican Party is like saying
Hitler was anti-Semitic.”
- Columnist Kathleen Parker, Chicago Tribune, 8/9/00

Invoking the Lord’s Name in Public
“Why can Sen. Joseph Lieberman repeatedly invoke the name of God in his
acceptance speech in a public forum and students at a public football game
can’t do the same?”
- John Treacy, Chicago Tribune, 8/9/00
*****************
Doing the Backpedal Tango
“Senator Lieberman has managed to balance a voting record that was in line
with the White House's position 89% of the time last year with an independent
streak on key issues, such as private Social Security accounts and education
vouchers. But when the Washington Times asked a Lieberman adviser if he still
backed those ideas it was told, ‘Not anymore.’”
- Wall Street Journal, 8/10/00

Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing
“Make no mistake: (Sen. Joe) Lieberman is a liberal. Despite his support
for such conservative issues as school vouchers, Lieberman’s liberal voting
record soars into the 80 percentile range. ... So what we have is a running
mate who isn’t quite what Gore’s spinners wish to make of him, brought on
board by Vice President Kaleidoscope, who is in a panicked retreat from his
liberal persona.”
- Columnist Dennis Byrne, Chicago Sun-Times, 8/9/00

The Only Effective “Affirmative Action”
“You take a poor black child. Give him a good education, tell him he’s
somebody, that God didn’t create junk when he created him, and that black
child will create his own affirmative action.”
- Rep. J.C. Watts at a press conference during the GOP convention in
Philadelphia

Peace of Mind for the Very Ill
The prescription drug issue has become a hot-hot-hot-button issue this
campaign season. Recently, the House passed a bill that would protect senior
citizens from being thrown into bankruptcy just to pay for their medicines.
Democrats promptly walked out of the House chamber in protest following the
vote. For many of you who are foggy on the details of the measure, here’s
the poop in a nutshell, as provided by the Seniors Coalition...
Never again will the high cost of prescription drugs force seniors into
poverty should they fall victim to a catastrophic illness. The bipartisan
Medicare prescription drug benefit covers all prescription drug costs that
you have paid over $6,000 and includes a special provision for low-income
seniors. Under the plan, singles with incomes below $11,272 and married
couples with combined incomes of less than $15,187 will enjoy full premium
and cost-sharing subsidies. Those with slightly higher incomes ($12,525 for
singles and $16,875 for married couples) will receive a substantial premium
subsidy. Here’s how it works:
$30-$40 Your monthly premium
$250 Your annual deductible
$2,100 Your initial drug benefit
$6,000 The most you’ll pay for medicine”

And Worth Every Penny, Right?
“Among all the states, only California provides bodyguards to all its
statewide officials -- right down to its superintendent of public
instruction. It will cost California taxpayers more than $31 million this
year to protect those seven officials and others who work in protected state
buildings.”
- Las Vegas Sun, 8/6/00

What If They Held an Election and Noboby Came?
“High temperatures and a lack of major statewide contests contributed to the
record low primary turnout in Colorado (on Tuesday). Final statewide turnout
numbers were not yet available, although it appeared to be below the 10%
mark. ... Republican primary voters in El Paso County dumped controversial
incumbent County Commissioner Betty Beedy in favor of dentist Tom Huffman.
Beedy, an arch-conservative, made headlines in the past when she publicly
referred to single mothers on welfare who dated as being ‘sluts.’”
