Clinton, Lazio set for initial debate Sept. 13 in Buffalo
8/25/00
U.S. Senate candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rick A.
Lazio will meet in their first debate Sept. 13 in Buffalo in a
nationally televised encounter co-sponsored by The Buffalo News
and WGRZ-TV, Channel 2.
The event will take place before an audience of about 350 in the
downtown studios of WNED-TV from 7 to 8 p.m. It will be
moderated by Tim Russert, the South Buffalo native who is host of
NBC's "Meet the Press." Panelists will include Robert J.
McCarthy, political reporter for The News, and Scott Levin, WGRZ
anchor.
The meeting will be the first of three debates between the
candidates, with two more planned for later in the campaign in
New York City. It also will allow viewers to e-mail questions to
the panelists at this address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
News Publisher Stanford Lipsey considers the event a milestone in
the campaign. "We're delighted to co-sponsor this first debate
between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rick Lazio," he said. "We're
even more delighted that Buffalo's own Tim Russert will act as
moderator.
"It will be the first opportunity not only to hear both
candidates direct themselves to the important issues of the
campaign, but to see them in a debate setting."
The live debate will be broadcast on Channel 2 and all NBC
affiliates in New York State. It will also be seen across the
country on MSNBC.
