Both the prosecution and defense agree that former postal worker Mark R.
Hilbun killed his mother and a co-worker in a 38-hour crime rampage in 1993
that also left seven people wounded.
But the accord ended there Tuesday in Orange County Superior Court. A
defense attorney told the Santa Ana jury that Hilbun, 42, was overcome by a
mental illness that fostered the belief that the world was ending and he and
a woman who had spurned him would regenerate the human race....

Convicted murderer Mark Hilbun believed that shock jock Howard Stern was
sending him subliminal messages via the radio to warn him of the apocalypse
and to urge him to flee in a kayak with a co-worker, Hilbun's defense
attorneys told a jury Monday.
"The more messages he thought he heard, the more he believed he was the only
one, the chosen one," defense attorney Denise Gragg said during the sanity
phase of Hilbun's trial. "He believed he had to flee in order to carry on
God's work." ...
