Communism: Poised for a Comeback?

Wasn't it Joe Kennedy who said that when your shoeshine boy is
buying stocks, it's time to get out of the market? Well, the
2000 version is that if your coffee guy has taken to day-trading
on his PalmPilot in-between half-fat cappuccino orders, get ready
to sell your stocks. Could it be that the latest wave of
capitalism is about to ebb and that much-maligned communism will
soon be on the rise? Consider the following.

This past summer, billionaire-boy Bill Gates was ordered to split
his powerful Microsoft in two-- his punishment for being too
successful. Or too greedy. But if we look at the definition of
capitalism, it appears that evil genius Gates was just doing his
job-- and extremely well. Take the entry on Capitalism found in
Encarta: "an economic system... characterized by a free
competitive market and motivation by profit." Oh, wait, Encarta
is Bill's on-line encyclopedia.

More proof that capitalism may be in decline could be found in
Survivor, the summer TV rating king. At first glance, Survivor
might seem capitalistic, what with the $1 million
winner-takes-all prize. But pretty early on, the 16 marooned
castaways were forced to band together on their Pulau Tiga island
in the South China Sea. It was clearly a socialist-type
arrangement that allowed them to eke out an existence by finding
a freshwater source, eating rat and building shelter. It's hard
to believe that the participantes who didn't collect the prize
money won't be revolutionized by their experience.

This year's other media cause-celebre, young Elian Gonzalez, also
helped show that communism isn't all bad. Even though his Miami
relatives lavished all of the tacky excesses of their new-found
wealth on him, then resorted to using a hat full of legal tricks
to keep the kid in the U.S., he still wanted to go back to Cuba.
What's more, it wasn't just Fidel Castro who supported him in his
desires, it was the majority of the American population. As if
that weren't bad enough, capitalism took yet another hit from
Elian when eBay.com put his raft on the auction block. It
garnered a high bid of $10 million, but trading had to be halted
when it was revealed that the item was a fake. Elian and his
crewmates had set off for Florida in a five-metre powerboat.

If the real boat ever does go up for sale, maybe the Survivor
losers will buy it to take them to Cuba. Who better to choose
between living on an island in difficult conditions and surviving
in the spotlight of the decadent capitalist media?
