Contaminated polio vaccine 'may have caused' Aids By David Pilling Pharmaceuticals Correspondent Published: September 10 2000 18:01GMT | Last Updated: September 12 2000 00:37GMT Aids, the worst health disaster of the 20th century, may have been caused by a contaminated polio vaccine given to African children, scientists in London will claim on Monday. A scientific gathering at the Royal Society will assess evidence, mostly circumstantial, that the virus made its disastrous leap from monkeys to humans via an experimental live polio vaccine given to more than 1m children in the 1950s. In those days, live vaccines were routinely prepared using monkey kidney tissue. The controversial polio vaccine theory contrasts with the generally accepted, though still unproven, view that HIV jumped species as a result of a monkey bite or of a hunter being contaminated through preparing or eating monkey flesh. In its simian form, HIV is generally harmless, but in humans it is almost invariably fatal. Although the polio hypothesis is not new, it has never before received such serious scientific consideration. It has been vigorously denied by those involved in the implicated polio vaccine trial and is still regarded sceptically by most scientists. The theory was brought to greater attention last year after publication of Edward Hooper's meticulously researched book, The River, A Journey Back to the Source of HIV and Aids. Mr Hooper contends that the cut-hunter theory does not explain why HIV, which has existed in chimpanzees for generations, suddenly began to infect humans at the end of the 20th century. The polio theory, he says, is also more consistent with the simultaneous outbreak of two distinct forms of HIV, including the less virulent HIV-2 that exists in west Africa. But there are several other plausible explanations. One is that deforestation brought mankind into far closer contact with monkeys from the 1950s. Another is that HIV has long existed in humans, but took on epidemic proportions as a result of social or political upheaval. Little serious research has been conducted into the origin of Aids. That is partly because of political and cultural sensitivities after the disease was discovered in the early 1980s. Researchers were also reluctant to rake over the past when resources were needed to fight one of the worst medical emergencies in human history. There is a terrible irony in the polio vaccine theory. This year, polio is well on the way to becoming only the second disease to be eradicated as a result of a different vaccine against the crippling disease developed by Albert Sabin.
