GLASTONBURY England
A finger print recovered from a 2000 year old silver chalice was
"almost certainly" left behind by Jesus of Nazereth, a top expert
says.
And people who have touched the fingerprint, or photos of
it,claim that it has astonishing healing powers.
"After photos of the print first appeared in a London newspaper,
hundreds of people wrote in saying they had been cured of mental
and physical ailments, ranging from TB to depression", says Dr
Reginald Halfcourt, the researcher who discovered the print.
The ornate cup first made headlines in 1997 when archaeologists
excavating the basement of Glastonbury Abbey discovered it and
identified it as the long sought Holy Grail, the cup used by
Jesus at the Last Supper. "English folklore has long held that
the chalice fell into the hands of Joseph of Arimathea, a New
Testament figure who helped arrange Christs burial," said Dr
Halfcourt.
"Tradition has it that Joseph later travelled to England,
bringing the Grail with him, and founded the first Christian
church on the island here in Glastonbury."
Throughout the Middle Ages, knights quested in vain for the
ancient chalice, but it took modern day scientists to find and
authenticate it. Dating techniques confirm it was made in 1st
century A.D. and is of Roman occupied Palestine," said Halfcourt.
The chalice has been subjected to rigorous tests over the years,
but Halfcourt was the first to apply sophisticated Scotland Yard
fingerprinting techniques to the artifact.
When he dusted the cup and a large, apparently male thumbprint
became visible, he felt a chill run down his spine.
"The print is extaordinarily clear. You can see the central
papillary edges distinctly," he says.
"It was certainly quite awe inspiring to hold up the cup and
realize you were almost certainly looking at the exact spot where
Christ touched it." Bible scholars say the idea of a miraculous
fingerprint is not all that far fetched.
"It is entirely consistant with biblical teaching that a place
where our Lord has laid His hands - and certainly any true image
of our Lord, would have unusual properties," says British
theologian Evan Sloane.
