JERUSALEM, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Israel cancelled a planned session of
peace talks with the Palestinians on Tuesday and a
senior Israeli official said a temporary suspension was in effect due to
Palestinian intransigence.
Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told Reuters he was "very surprised"
by the decision and expressed regret that talks
planned for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday apparently would not be held.
"(Israeli Prime Minister Ehud) Barak decided on
a temporary suspension because of a hardening in the Palestinian
positions," said the official, who insisted on anonymity.
"Therefore, today"s meeting was cancelled."
