GORE AIDE BOASTS OF SPY

An aide on Al Gore's campaign has boasted of having a "mole"
inside the George W. Bush camp - insisting that Gore staffers
"knew where Bush was going before Bush knew," a new report says.

The bombshell report from ABC News came last night as the FBI
probed how a videotape and documents of Bush's debate preparation
got into the hands of the Gore campaign on Sept. 13.

ABC interviewed a person who said on videotape that Michael
Doyne, 28, assistant to Gore's national field director, Donnie
Fowler, had boasted about the spy inside the Bush campaign.

While no connection has been established between the purloined
videotape and the alleged "mole," Gore staffers were worried the
stories might hurt their campaign.

"They are concerned that if a story comes out about this, it
would be damaging to the Gore campaign and Al Gore and, of
course, to me personally," Doyne told The Post.

Doyne said he doesn't recall telling a friend that there was a
"mole" inside the Bush campaign. But he doesn't deny saying it.

"I'll go ahead and go along with it," he said. "I may have. I
just don't remember the exchange."

Ten days after Doyne allegedly told his friend about the mole,
Doyne sent an e-mail to the friend, telling him to be "hush hush"
on the mole issue, the ABC News report said.

Doyne told The Post he was responding to a teasing e-mail from
the friend, which said: "By the way, Bush wants to know who the
mole is."

Doyne told ABC News he "didn't intentionally lie" and didn't
remember the discussion or e-mail "because it wasn't
significant."

Doyne said Gore's campaign lawyers took his affidavit, in which
he denied all the allegations, but had to change it when ABC
approached them with the "hush-hush" e-mail.

He was suspended by the campaign yesterday while Gore officials
in Nashville reviewed his actions.

Bush aides had no immediate response to the "mole" report.

Earlier yesterday, the Bush camp accused the FBI of playing
politics and leaking word that a Bush staffer is suspected of
giving Bush's debate-prep video to Gore's campaign.

"It is wrong and inappropriate for the Justice Department to play
politics by leaking information about an ongoing law-enforcement
investigation in the midst of a presidential campaign," said Bush
communications director Karen Hughes.

Bush campaign manager Joe Allbaugh placed an urgent call to FBI
chief Louis Freeh to complain and say that if the FBI has a
suspect, Bush wants to know the name.

FBI spokeswoman Tracy Gilberling refused to say if the FBI has a
suspect.

The video of Bush doing debate prep with Sen. Judd Gregg
(R-N.H.), who played Gore, mysteriously arrived Sept. 13 at the
Washington lobbying office of ex-Long Island Rep. Tom Downey, who
was helping Gore prepare.
