Anglo sugar estate will not seized.
Zimbabwe says it was mistakenly included on resettlement list

HARARE - The Zimbabwean government has admitted mistakeny listing one of the
nation's most productive sugar estates for resettle ment of landless black
people.
State television reported yesterday that Zimbabwe had assured Nicky
Oppenheimer, deputy chairman of Anglo American, that no part of his
company's Hippo Valley sugar estate in southeastern Zimbabwe would be
confiscated.
President Robert Mugabe met Oppenheimer and other Anglo ex- ecutives on
Monday and promised to remove 38 OOOha of the estate from a list of
white-owned properties targeted for seizure, Oppenheimer told state
television.
"We were reassured that the president told us a mistake had been made and
agroindustrial estates were not intended for resettlement. "
Parts of several other lumber, sugar, citrus and horticulture
estates have been targeted for seizure, but their fate was not immediately
clear.
The sugar estate mistakenly ap- peared on a list of hundreds of white-owned
fanns the government plans to confiscate, divide in- to small plots and
redistribute to landless black people.
The Commercial Farmers Union, representing about 4 000 white fanners, says
the list con- tains errors and duplications. Properties owned by the state
rail- road and forestry companies, several church missions. a petrol storage
depot, a golf club and at least two schools have been included.
The government has not acknowledged the errors.
Ruling party militants and squatters have since February illegally occupied
more than 1 700 white-Qwned farms.
Meanwhile, Lewis Machipisa reports that Zimbabwe's main opposition, the
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), yesterdayex- pressed "utter shock" at
Home Af- fairs Minister John Nkomo's allegations in parliament that the
police had found grenades, pistols, rifles and tear smoke at its offices.
Nkomo said in parliament that police searches at the MDC sUp" port centre,
head office and MDC provincial offices at St Martins and at homes of MDC
officials in Harare had proved that the party had stashed weapons of war .
The searches came after a grenade was hurled at an MDC of- fice last week,
and were conducted on Thursday and Saturday.
The MDC said the searches for the weapons of war , which were conducted by
the police in full view of local and international media and MDC lawyers,
had yielded nothing. Senior officials of the par- ty are due to meet today
to discuss the issue.
