Tripp Deserves Medal of Freedom

Word now comes from former Russian President Boris Yeltsin in his
soon-to-be-released autobiography, "Midnight Diaries," that
Russian intelligence in 1996 told him of Clinton's penchant for
sex with lovely young ladies. Yeltsin further claims that he was
told that the Republicans would put a young lady on the White
House staff to seduce the president in order to imperil his
incumbency.
The second part of this – the part fingering the GOP – is to be
doubted because:
a) this is the party that couldn't even conduct a trial in the
Senate, let alone arrange a seduction; and
b) putting a woman in Clinton's way is a bit like putting a
straw in a glass of water for a man who has been lost in the
desert. It's not really necessary.
But if the first part of the tale is true, that a foreign
power's intelligence apparatus knew of what we now know, by
virtue of the Lewinsky affair, to be the
security-breach-waiting-to-happen of this reckless president,
then there is one person on the entire planet who deserves the
eternal thanks of all the American people, including the
president and the first lady of the United States.
Her name is Linda Tripp.
By alerting independent counsel Kenneth Starr, the United States
Congress, and the American people to the dangerous philandering
of Bill Clinton – dangerous most significantly because it exposed
this president and thus all its citizens to blackmail – Linda
Tripp served the best interests of her country well.
We now know that Clinton lied under oath, suborned perjury and
obstructed justice to hide from the American people the details
of an affair that every person with a pulse knew or should have
known was true within days of its reportage on the Internet.
One must ask, in light of what Yeltsin is now plausibly saying,
the following: How far would Bill Clinton have gone – how much
would he have been willing to give up, clandestinely, to a
foreign power – which threatened him with revealing to the world
an affair with an intern that it did not know about? To quote Mr.
Rogers: "Can you say, 'Everything?' "
This was the nightmare scenario America avoided: A hostile
government, such as China, tells a blackmailable president that
he must, for example, allow the invasion of Taiwan, or it will
give the world, through back channels, the details of his affair
with an intern. What would this president do? Are you kidding?
Again, he shredded the Constitution to hide something we intuited
must be true, given the details that we learned daily.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest honor
available to any citizen, given to one person, who, despite the
cost, makes an incalculable contribution to his or her nation's
freedom.
There is no person, in the last decade, who deserves this honor
more than the woman who, despite the sacrifices by herself and
her family, risked all, including personal safety, to deliver the
United States of America from blackmail at the hands of a foreign
power.
That person is Linda Tripp.
This president will not, of course, award her this honor she
deserves. Nor will the next president, nor will any president.
But deserve it she does. Linda Tripp, the target of jokes from
moral midgets, deserves this and any other medal anyone can think
of minting for her. Linda Tripp served her country well. She
identified a domestic enemy of our freedom. He was living in the
White House. He deserves our contempt.
She deserves our eternal thanks.
