Report: U.S. Wants Access to Port Video Held by Yemen

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. investigators struggling to discover
who ordered last week's deadly attack on the USS Cole are
especially anxious to get their hands on video from four port
surveillance cameras seized by Yemeni secret police, Newsweek
magazine said in a report to appear on newsstands on Monday.

U.S. investigators in the Yemeni port of Aden, including agents
from the FBI (news - web sites), a marine security platoon and
the Foreign Emergency Support Team, also want to talk to port
workers and relatives detained by police after Thursday's blast,
Newsweek reported.

U.S. Navy officials say a small boat helping to moor the Cole had
been laden with explosives in advance and blew up alongside the
ship, punching a huge hole in one of the world's most
sophisticated guided missile destroyers. Seventeen U.S. sailors
were killed in the blast.

Two little-known Muslim groups have said they attacked the
destroyer. One group has previously been linked to the kidnapping
of tourists and the bombing of a hotel in Aden.

However, such claims are often suspect because ``terrorists share
resources and use different identities to suit their needs,''
Newsweek reported, citing unidentified U.S. sources.

Saudi exile Osama bin Laden, has repeatedly vowed to strike U.S.
military targets in the Middle East, Newsweek noted, citing a
video aired by a satellite television station in the Emirate of
Qatar two weeks ago in which bin Laden appeared flanked by two
Egyptian lieutenants.

Citing the need to free militants in prisons in the United
States, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, one of bin Laden's lieutenants
said it was ``time to take action against the iniquitous and
faithless force (the United States) which has spread troops
through Egypt, Yemen and Saudi Arabia,'' the magazine reported.

Intelligence analysts took special note of the reference to Yemen
following last week's attack, Newsweek said.

Other possible culprits include Iraq, Yemeni Marxists and the
Lebanese fundamentalist group Hizbullah, Newsweek said in an
article to appear in its Oct. 23 issue.

In that article, Newsweek cited ``authoritative'' U.S. sources as
saying U.S. intelligence has thwarted at least two other
terrorist plots directed at U.S. Navy ships visiting ports around
the Arabian Peninsula in the last two years.

The magazine, citing sources privy to an April meeting between
Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and President Clinton (news -
web sites), said Saleh expressed a willingness to cooperate but
at the same time told Clinton he did not believe terrorists were
operating in his country.
