Dear Citizen Activist: We are headed into the final month of the campaign in good shape and with some hard work, prepared to wipe the smug smile off the faces of the two major corporate parties. The political landscape now is more favorable to us than at any time this year. And the super rallies have proven that our campaign is not going to politely fade into the history books. The debate commission has been exposed and with their heavy handed tactics of denying Ralph Nader a chance to view the debate in an anteroom they have validated everything we have said about them. Our focus this week is to explain why for most of the country, a vote for Nader is not a "wasted" vote or a "spoiler" vote. PRINT MISSION: The topic for this week's letter to the editor is refuting the democratic argument that if you vote for Ralph Nader you are spoiling Al Gore's chances or wasting your vote. Except for a very small number of states, people have a free vote. They can vote their conscience for Ralph Nader, send a message that they understand that the system is corrupt and it's time to clean up Washington. In at least three-fourths of the country, and perhaps as many as nine states out of ten, a vote for Ralph Nader is not a vote for George Bush-it's really a vote for Ralph Nader. Here's why: the president is not elected by the popular vote, but by a majority (270) of the 538 electoral votes. These electoral votes are cast by state, and it's winner-take-all within each state. Thus, a Nader vote has no chance of "spoiling" the outcome for Al Gore unless it potentially changes the outcome within each state. The truth is, for 90 percent of the states (including the biggest ones), that's not going to happen So here's the test. If you live in Florida, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin, you live in a battleground state and you should still vote for Ralph Nader and tell your nervous friends that they should vote for their hopes and dreams and not their fears. If you live in any of the 43 other states a vote for Bush or Gore is a wasted vote because of the electoral college, and its winner take all system. Vote for Nader and send a message that we our not going to give up our government without a fight. DIRECT ACTION MISSION: This week we need to direct our energy into our own neighborhoods. All politics is local, and we have to get our message out to people who don't know that Ralph is running. You can get flyers from the local coordinators or download the flyer from our website: http://www.votenader.org/downloads/NaderFlyer3.pdf and distribute it in your neighborhood. Before you go door-to-door, please contact your county coordinator to find who is coordinating canvassing efforts in your neighborhood - we don't want to create duplicate efforts. If you don't know your county coordinator, just ask your state coordinator (http://www.votenader.org/getinvolved.html). If you have questions check out the canvassing section of the Nader 2000 Field Manual before hitting the streets (http://www.votenader.org/fieldmanualintro.html). WEB MISSION: The mission for this week is to find a political website that is missing a Nader link and send the administrator a request. Let's make sure that we are using all the tools at our disposal. FUNDRAISING MISSION: There is a new house-party contest on our website. The winner gets to host a GOTV rally at the end of the campaign with a celebrity from our national steering committee. To find out more details go to: www.votenader.org/materials/houseparty/contest.html ISSUE OF THE WEEK: KEEP OUR AIRWAVES PUBLIC In a blatant effort to curry favor with the corporate media, the Democrats and Republicans in the Senate are working to pass a bill that will kill grassroots radio. In January 2000 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to create new Low Power FM (LPFM) radio service. Local, non-commercial stations could be built for between 5 and 10 thousand dollars. Since then thousands of excited schools, activist groups, arts organizations and all sorts of non-profits in every state have applied or prepared to apply to build a neighborhood radio station. Over 1300 applications for (LPFM) licenses have already been received by the FCC. Legislation to gut the LPFM initiative has passed in the House of Representatives and is poised to be passed in the Senate THIS WEEK! The airwaves belong to the people, not corporate interests. We have no time to waste. The Senate will only be in session for a few more days. The bill to quash LPFM now stands at 53 co-sponsors in the Senate, including many key Democrats. Make your Senator think twice before doing the bidding of the big broadcasters. Send to: The Honorable __________ United States Senate Washington, DC 20510 To find your senator, go to www.senate.gov Thank you for your support of the Nader 2000 campaign! _________________________________________________________________ To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change options: http://votenader.org/newsletter.html Through this weekly newsletter you will get updates about the latest happenings in the Nader 2000 campaign: you can find out how you can volunteer (http://votenader.org/volunteer.html), how you and your friends can make contributions (http://votenader.org/donate.html) and how to ENCOURAGE OTHERS to VOLUNTEER and WORK to TRANSFORM THIS YEAR'S RACE INTO AN OPEN DEBATE ON CORPORATE CONTROL OF OUR DEMOCRACY AND OUR LIVES.
