At some point in the late seventies or early eighties I heard an oil
executive discussing some matter or other on one of those talking heads
programs on public television (this was before corporate America had managed
to pull quite all its teeth and there were still informative, controversial
programs to be seen). Anyway, he said very confidently that the US would go
to war to protect its oil interests in the Middle East any time. I thought
he was wrong, but he certainly had the clear picture. Prudy
