Fuel Panic Starts In Britain

Motorists in Britain are starting to stockpile fuel in
anticipation of nationwide shortages if fuel protests are
renewed. The health service and industrial users are also
believed to be building up supplies in response to government
advice.
Ministers fears a repeat of September's blockades of oil
terminals and distribution depots by truck drivers and other
motorists angry at the high price of fuel. When the September
blockades were called off, with much of Britain out of fuel, the
protestors gave the Government 60 days to cut the heavy taxes on
gasoline.
With the November 13 deadline approaching, the Government is
adamant it will not bow to the demands. But the Chancellor,
Gordon Brown, the man who holds the purse strings, is working on
a package of measures to help those hit hardest by the high fuel
costs. The details will be announced next week in his Pre-Budget
Report.
If his concessions do not live up to the expectations of
protestors, the blockades will resume. The demonstrators have
already announced plans for a massive convoy of lorries to travel
from Tyneside in north England to London on November 14, the day
after the deadline expires.
The extent of the looming crisis is indicated by the Prime
Minister's decision to call off this weekend's high-profile visit
to Moscow to meet President Putin. Instead he will be engaged in
last-minute discussions on how to head off another clash with the
protestors.
