U.S. Says Serb Nationalists Must Be Kept Out Of Power in Bosnia UNITED NATIONS, Nov 15, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse) The United States told the UN Security Council on Tuesday that hardline nationalists who topped the poll in weekend elections in the Serb part of Bosnia should be denied power. "We will continue to urge that obstructionists be kept out of the government," the deputy U.S. representative to the United Nations, James Cunningham, said during a public council debate. On Monday, international organizers said preliminary results showed that the nationalist Serb Democratic Party (SDS) had won 36.8 percent of the vote in elections to the assembly in the Republika Srpska. The Republika Srpska is one of two entities created by the 1995 Dayton peace agreement that ended the brutal three-year war that followed Bosnia's declaration of independence. The Party of Independent Social Democrats, led by the western-backed prime minister of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, won 17.9 percent of the vote, the preliminary count showed. Reports of illegal campaign activity "only reinforce our belief that the SDS continues to be controlled by those who are committed to see Dayton fail," Cunningham said. "Important decisions remain to be made about governing coalitions," he said. It was "critically important" that the international community be prepared "to act forcefully to ensure that those who are opposed to Dayton are not in a position to block the peace accords," he added. The head of UN peacekeeping operations, Jean-Marie Guehenno, told the council that "although the SDS is expected to have a strong showing in the assembly, it is not expected to win an absolute majority." He forecast that the reformist Party of Democratic Progress (PDP) would "play a pivotal role".
