The data seems to confirm the allegation that the double punching was primarily confusion over the ballot, or difficulty in matching holes (according to Palm Beach voter statements, the ballot appears to have been in some cases misprinted and not have had the holes match up correctly - showing the claim that "First graders had no problem with the ballot" to be a lie, since they weren't using the same machines.) The vast majority of double-punches were Gore and Buchanan votes. Perhaps, in a moment of schizophrenia, voters decided to vote for both. Perhaps some are actually Buchanan votes that accidentally punched Gore (though considering Palm Beach already had an abnormal number of votes to Pat already (a number exceeding what should be expected by over 2,000), that seems unlikely.) The most likely scenario, however, is that these errors lean to Gore, but the voter's choice was denied due to gross negligence of the state of Florida in designing the ballot. Over the past two weeks, voters of Palm Beach have been insulted over thks fiasco by right-wing blowhards, who normally proclaim a desire to embrace individual rights over defending the state. The right to representation is a cornerstone of our country, and was a basic rallying cry for its formation. This is not a game. This is not basketball or football where an unfair call from the ref can determine the outcome of the game. Where in the end people go home grumbling about the unfairness of it all but accepting the outcome nonetheless. This is a democracy. We cannot be expected to accept this outcome. We cannot be expected to grumble about this unfairness and move on. There should be no uncertainty, no unfairness in a democracy. It is clear that in this uncertain time, the only thing that will bring the American people certainty is a revote in Florida. A recount just isn't enough to restore America's confidence in our electoral process. If Florida's citizens do not get an opportunity to cast their votes for the real candidate of their choice, then at least half of America's population will be doubting the legitimacy of America's President for the next four years. Furthermore, if Republicans are so confident that Bush won the electoral vote in Florida, then they should not feel threatened at all by the prospect of a revote. If in fact Bush did win the electoral vote in Florida as Republicans wish to claim, then surly a revote would show this. Republicans need to give American citizens a bit more credit - no one is fooled by their attempts to sweep this issue under the rug. It is clear that Republicans fear the truth - the truth being that if the citizens of Florida are given the opportunity to cast their votes for the candidate of their choice, Gore will be victorious. Conservatives' calls for Gore to concede are off base and I believe unconstitutional. It is not Gore's place to concede. Neither Gore nor Bush get to decide by concession who will be the next president. It is the American people who decide who will be President and they decide with their votes. In this case, the votes have been tainted by ballots in Florida that are questionable at best and illegal at worst. Gore has a responsibility to the American people. It is his responsibility to hang in there until this election has been resolved in a fair, legitimate and legal way. And I can see no simpler way to resolve this issue than holding a revote in Florida. It is the only way to settle the issue once and for all. I have a BA, a music certification, and teach children and adults. I am a writer and consider myself intelligent, articulate, and well educated. I would like to set the record straight about a few things that are being distorted or misreported in the national media. I believe that not only we as individuals serve as mirrors for one another, so do we as larger entities. What is happening in my county is simply a mirror of our collective consciousness on one level and the presidential, voting process in our country. On a metaphysical level, I can see how all of this turbulence is actually a clearing away of some of the gray area so , that light can come in, and I look forward to the positive changes that will happen as a result of all that is 'coming to light'. Please know that our community is hurting, divided and searching for enlightenment and truth. We need and deserve your compassion and your prayers, not your judgement as to whether we are selfish or 'holding the rest of the country hostage'. It is very important to us that our vote be counted, that we are able to vote for the candidate that we thought we were voting for, and that fairness prevail. The last time I checked, the electoral college does not meet until December, and until that time perhaps we can all send light and the hope that the illusion of separation, and the spector of fraud that has made its way to Palm Beach county be either proved or disproved so that healing can begin. One important piece of news you may not have have heard is that the design of this particular ballot is indeed illegal. The candidates are not listed in the order that is mandated. 1. I can tell you that voting on that ballot WAS confusing. I checked it three times and still felt uneasy. 2. The sample ballot that was sent to us prior to the election was printed on 8 1/2 x 11 paper and did not include the 'holes' that were on the actual ballot. Therefore there was no way to know beforehand how the holes lined up and that a vote for Gore was actually the third hole and number 5, not the second hole and number 4. 3.Contrary to what you might have heard, this is not sour grapes in complaining after the fact. Complaints about this ballot starting coming in to the elections board, the Democratic Party and the local media starting about 5 minutes after the election began and continued all day. The elections office sent out a memo as soon as they could and our one lone liberal media voice, Randi Rhodes, did get the word out from 3-7 on her radio show on WJNO, but for many it was too late. 4. Not only was the ballot confusing, but many districts had three pages of presidential nominees, not just two pages. In two counties, the congressional candidates were left off of the ballot. 5. Several locked ballot boxes were found after the fact, uncounted and forgotten. 6. Many voters found that they had been mistakenly listed as an ex- felon and could therefore not vote. In addition, many voters who registered directly through Tallahassee did not receive their voter registration cards at all. 7. Many black voters throughout this state found their right to vote was also blocked in various different manners. At a rally yesterday led by Reverend Jesse Jackson, many of the opposing opinion brought bullhorns so that is was impossible to hear what he had to say. In addition, they yelled racial epithets and yelled many taunts at the people in our community. 8. The figure of 19,000 votes thrown out for either overvoting or undervoting is incorrect. the correct number is closer to 30,000. Allow a fair win for Governor Bush, if he is the winner in Florida.
