WOULD DUBYA PARDON BUBBA?
FORGET about Bill Clinton's next job for the moment: A more
pressing issue for our outgoing president is whether or not a
victorious George W. Bush would grant him a pardon in the way
Gerald Ford got Richard Nixon off the legal hook.
The pardon issue has suddenly grown much more serious with this
week's news that independent counsel Robert Ray intends to
reinterview Monica Lewinsky this month, obviously with a view to
prosecuting Clinton as a civilian.
There is some interesting talk going around about how the pardon
issue would be handled by presumed-president Bush. For example,
Seth Gitell, writing in the Boston Phoenix, suggests that
pardoning a Democratic former president reviled by his own party
would set a real bipartisan tone in Washington.
But other political observers note that Bush is a man who doesn't
easily extend olive branches to his enemies. While not moralizing
over Clinton'spersonal conduct, Bush does loathe the man for
defeating his father in 1992.
Then there is the GOP's hard right in Congress. They still want
Clinton's scalp, and even talk (shades of Nixon's "enemies list"
) about punishing some of his most prominent and generous
supporters - are you reading this, Barbra Streisand, Harvey
Weinstein and Alec Baldwin?
Even if Bush was inclined to be kind and statesmanlike toward
Clinton, his party, and particularly his veep, Dick Cheney, would
oppose such action. After what we've just been through, neither
side is going to make nice with the other.
Getting back to Bill's job prospects, the Express newspaper in
London is reporting that the old non-inhaler is up for the job of
chancellor of Oxford University. Bill, of course, had a great
time ducking the draft at Oxford and could take this ceremonial
job, which pays peppercorns but requires no time.
What can I say?
SPEAKING of the prez, there's no question New York City is the
center of the universe and he is our most intriguing future
citizen. Since writing about the possibility of Bill running for
mayor and reporting rumors of Bill and Hill selling their
Chappaqua "home," I've been deluged with requests for radio and
TV interviews. The only ones I've accepted (just because they
seemed so far away) were from a station in Fargo, N.D., and one
in Buenos Aires. It is, indeed, a global village.
The kid's well-connected
IF you want a bit of trivia to tuck away, young Zachary Rodham
has just become the only person in the history of our democracy
to have both a grandmother and an aunt in the U.S. Senate. The
son of Terry Rodham (Hillary's brother) now has his mom's mom,
California Sen. Barbara Boxer, and Hillary to call on if he wants
a guided tour of Washington monuments.
