Representative dogs Reno over secret-evidence cases

By MICHAEL FECHTER
The Tampa Tribune

The second ranking Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives
angrily called on Attorney General Janet Reno to resign Thursday
because of the Justice Department's efforts to keep two
immigrants in jail based on secret evidence.

The efforts against Tampa resident Mazen Al-Najjar and an
Algerian from Northern Virginia named Anwar Haddam are the worst
injustices Michigan Rep. David Bonior said he's seen during 30
years in elected office.

Both men could have been freed Thursday from years of
incarceration despite never having been charged with crimes.
Al-Najjar's release was postponed after the Immigration and
Naturalization Service appealed an order that would have allowed
him to be free on bail.

Haddam, an Algerian parliamentarian who worked with that
country's Islamic Salvation Front, has been held on secret
evidence for four years. He recently won asylum from an
immigration appellate court, but Reno interceded this week,
imposing a 45-day stay on Haddam's release, Bonior said.

``This will not stand,'' Bonior said. ``We have tried to work
through the system but the system is stacked in the most
egregious and offensive way possible.''

A human rights group in New York wants to sue Haddam for crimes
against humanity saying he aided the Islamic Salvation Front's
``campaign of terror against civil society in Algeria,'' that
targeted women and others who didn't follow strict religious
dictates.
